La Salle holds steady at #18 nationally

Week 4 of the high school football season saw most teams get into localized play, dramatically lowering the risk of loss, and as such the Media Compilation Top 25 saw more stability than in previous weeks.

The lone team to fall from the Week 3 Compilation was Grayson (Loganville, GA) despite actually gaining three points to its total. The No. 25 team from a week ago was replaced by St. Joseph (Montvale, NJ) which — with all due respect to Grayson and its victory over Archer (Lawrenceville, GA) — has a better resume of wins, now defeating Don Bosco (Ramsey, NJ), St. Edward (Lakewood, OH), and DePaul (Wayne, NJ).

Past Media Compilations:
Select Week
Preseason – Aug. 18
Week 0 – Aug. 25
Week 1 – Sept. 1
Week 2 – Sept. 8
Week 3 – Sept. 15
Week 4 – Sept. 22

Aside from the change near the bottom most of the rest of the poll stayed nearly the same as last week.

The HSFB100 from NationalHSFootball.com and PrepNation.com Top 25 did not have any turnover with its teams from last week. Each did some minor shuffling after the Top 15 all returned in order.

The USAToday Super 25 replaced Flanagan (Pembroke Pines, FL) with Mainland (Daytona Beach, FL) after the Falcons were upset in Florida. The MaxPreps Xcellent 25 also had to move Flangan from its Top 10 after a loss and replaced the team with Mater Dei (Santa Ana, CA).

Each computer poll had turnover as well.

The Jeff Fisher Algorithm had Pittsburgh Central Catholic (PA) bounced after it lost and it was replaced with Byrnes (Duncan, SC) while the Freeman Computer from CalPreps.com (also known as the MaxPreps Computer rankings) dispatched of Lake Taylor (Norfolk, VA) and Wayne (Huber Heights, OH) and placed Maryville (TN) and Gilman (Baltimore, MD).

The Media Compilation takes into account the four most respected human polls, the top computer model, and an emerging hybrid human-algorithm to make for the best rankings in the country.

Those under consideration are the NationalHSFootball.com HSFB100; USAToday Super 25; MaxPreps Xcellent25; PrepNation Top 25; Jeff Fisher’s Top 25 and the Freeman Computer Top 25.

For a mathematically sound compilation each team is given points from 40 to 16 for being inside the Top 25 of each of those six polls with no points awarded for any additional rankings due to the differing size of each poll.

Points are assigned in decreasing value starting with 40 being awarded for No. 1 and on down to 16 for No. 25 which will result in a more accurate representation of the polls. Assigning points starting at 1 point would skew the tally in the instance that a team received a single, high placement versus a team with lower placements in multiple polls, raising the baseline eliminates the outlier impact in the compilation.

The poll will be updated and released each Tuesday of the football season.

Bishop Gorman (NV) 2 1 1 2 2 1
Bishop Gorman was unchanged across all polls this week. The Gaels got a career-high performance from junior runningback Biaggio Ali Walsh who went for 200-plus yards on the ground as one of the top teams in the country bettered Long Beach Poly (CA), 52-13. Bishop Gorman has made several teams look pedestrian in the early portion of the season.
2 (2)

228

Aquinas (FL) 3 2 2 3 5 3
Aquinas did not move in any polls as it cruised to a win over Cypress Bay, 45-10. The special teams did a lot of the damage as it blocked a field goal which led to a scoring drive, blocked a punt which was retuned for a touchdown, and got a traditional punt return for a touchdown — all in the first quarter. The game was 35-0 in the blink of an eye and was played with a running clock in the second half.
3 (3)

218

Centennial (CA) 6 6 3 4 3 6
A rarity for the USAToday as it made a move in SoCal jumping Centennial with St. John Bosco. It caused the Huskies to slide from No. 3 to No. 6 in its poll. Centennial put itself out to a 42-0 lead at halftime and cruised to a 52-0 drubbing of Sherman Oaks Notre Dame (CA). JJ Taylor ran for 128 yards on 11 carries and two scores. Quarterback Anthony Catalano added two touchdowns on the ground.
4 (5)

217

Allen (TX) 7 4 5 7 1 5
Allen was the beneficiary of the USAToday move as it climbed from No. 6 to No. 4 and gained enough points to push past DeMatha in the Compilation Poll. The Eagles returned two interceptions and a fumble for touchdowns. It secured four more fumbles and another interception as well as blocked a punt. The game was only 20-0 at halftime and got ugly after the break as Plano fumbled on three consecutive snaps in the third quarter to get it to 65-0.
5 (4)

216

DeMatha (MD) 4 8 4 6 4 4
DeMatha came out flat in what became a 32-12 win over La Salle (Wyndmoor, PA). It was down 12-3 at halftime after costly penalties and turnovers put DeMatha behind. After the break it looked a little better as quarterback Beau English found a groove and the running backs hit paydirt multiple times. The Stags fell from No. 4 to No. 8 in the USAToday 25 which was really active inside its Top 10.
6 (6)

212

St. John Bosco (CA) 1 3 7 1 6 16
The Braves moved up three spots in the USAToday as well as two on the Freeman Computer to close the gap on the Top 5. St. John Bosco blew the game open early against Crespi (Encino, CA) and ran away with a 55-7 victory. Few teams have had its stock fall as far as Crespi since the beginning of the season. The strength of schedule for St. John Bosco has taken some serious hits in the early going.
7 (8)

184

IMG Academy (FL) 10 11 10 13 16 2
IMG made a major move in the MaxPreps poll, gaining nine spots top get into the Top 10 of that poll. Its only other gain was one point at USAToday. The Ascenders took advantage of special teams to build a 35-14 halftime lead against now-No. 16 Bergen Catholic (Oradell, NJ) which continued to battle back tho close the game to one score late in the fourth. The Ascenders need to tighten up the defensive penalties but its offense is near unstoppable.
8 (7)

176

Colquitt County (GA) 5 5 6 5 8
Colquitt lost its points from the Freeman Computer which dropped the Packers after it cruised to victory. The Freeman Computer has long been harsh on Georgia as it currently doesn’t have a single team from the state in its Top 25. Quarterback Chase Parrish threw for 252 yards and six touchdowns. In the first half. His backup was in during the second quarter and threw two more touchdowns.
9 (9)

169

Trinity (TX) 12 12 16 10 7 20
Trinity bouyed in the polls this week sliding up and down in a few but staying at No. 9 overall. The Trojans pulled away in the second half to defeat North Shore (Houston, TX), 42-32. Running back Ja’Ron Wilson went for 245 yards and quarterback Tyler Natee added 136, combining for five touchdowns between them. Trinity dominated the second half by scoring 22 points and blanking North Shore until it scored a meaningless touchdown with 12 seconds left.
10 (16)

156

De La Salle (CA) 13 14 19 12 11 21
The Spartans gained re-entry into the Freeman Computer this week after dropping following Week 3. It gained two places at MaxPreps and one on the USAToday polls. De La Salle did not stuggle one bit in bettering Orange Lutheran (CA), 41-3. The Spartans were paced by Andrew Hernandez and his 121 yards on seven carries as well as Antoine Custer, who went for 105 on 12 touches.
11 (11)

153

Ocean Lakes (VA) 11 9 8 11 13
Ocean Lakes will be the ultimate buoy the rest of this season as there isn’t a team on the slate that is going to down the Dolphins until deep in the playoffs. It was idle this week and likely faced tougher tests in practice than the last two weeks when it won 125-0. Its point total didn’t change this week with the time off.
12 (12)

150

Spartanburg (SC) 14 16 12 14 23 17
The Vikings jumped out to a 21-0 lead over Greenwood (SC) and went on to win, 42-7. Austin Scott connected on two long touchdowns to Tavaris Scott in the first quarter and five-star running back Tavien Feater grabbed six passes for 120 yards and two more scores while toting the ball 10 times for 38 yards. It gained three spots at USAToday.
13 (10)

144

Cedar Hill (TX) 8 15 18 8 12
The Longhorns were punished for turning in what may have been the least impressive win of any team in the Top 25. Cedar Hill pulled away in the fourth quarter to defeat Coppell (TX), 36-21. It was a battle into the fourth quarter as Cedar Hill didn’t take the lead until 1:09 left in the third when it secured a 23-21 advantage. It then score two more times in the final frame to set the margin. The USAToday dropped it four spots; MaxPreps one, and the Freeman moved it outside the Top 25 from No. 23.
14 (15)

143

American Heritage (FL) 9 13 9 9 22
American Heritage gained big points this week as MaxPreps gave it the same boost it did IMG Academy after the win. Curiously the USAToday and the Fisher Algorithm have American Heritage ranked but behind IMG Academy as though they are not counting the on-field result as an actual game. If that is the case then why would the Patriots be ranked in those polls? Wins over Stephenson (GA), Miami Northwestern (FL), and Coconut Creek (FL) — with a loss against DeMatha (MD) — would be a tough resume to rank in the Top 25.
15 (13)

142

Katy (TX) 18 10 11 15 9
Katy dropped in the Compiltion 25 for the fourth straight week. The Tigers will likely start to buoy until the playoffs as the team is going to continue to dominate a district that it has owned for as long as anyone can remember. This week it blanked Mayde Creek, 52-0. It has only allowed 7 points all season but has only played one team — The Woodlands (TX) — that has been reasonably competitive.
16 (14)

128

Bergen Catholic (NJ) 21 22 22 21 24 8
Major respect was given to the top team in New Jersey this week after a loss to IMG. The HSFB100 moved it up three spots; PrepNation only slid it backwards one, and the Freeman Computer remained steady. Both the USAToday and Fisher Algorithm dropped the Crusaders four. The team scored touchdowns on seven of 11 offensive possessions and may have fared better if it didn’t allow two special teams touchdowns, a fumbe scoop-and-score, and a fake punt conversion.
17 (21)

125

Mater Dei (CA) 15 25 18 13 9
Mater Dei gained entry to the MaxPreps poll at No. 25 and added 16 points because of it. The Monarch defense held Upland (CA) to just 166 total yards — only 38 on the ground with 19 carries — in a 43-14 victory this week. Conversely the Monarchs piled up 500 yards on the night with 212 on the ground and 288 in the air. Freshman quarterback JT Daniels hit Osiris St. Brown for three scores in the game, too.
18 (19)

124

La Salle (OH) 20 24 20 10 7
La Salle gained a couple of points in three of the four human polls that has the Lancers ranked as it beat an overmatched Christian Brothers team, 49-14. The two computer formulas stayed steady with the placements and the HSFB100 continued to have the top team in Ohio just outside of its Top 25 at No. 27. The reaction of all polls was as it should have been for checking the box this week.
19 (17)

119

South Panola (MS) 25 15 24 14 14
The Tiger slid backwards five spots in the Freeman Computer, two in the HSFB100, and one at MaxPreps and could be trending in the wrong direction in several polls. The offense looked better as quarterback Tyler Pogue continues to work his way back from an injury as it beat Memphis University School, 49-28. There doesn’t appear to be much meat left on the bone in the regular season for the Tigers who can get healthy before a very curious Class 6A playoff path is set.
20 (20)

108

Rummel (LA) 24 24 14 16 19
Rummel slides backwards as its offense struggled for large stretches aginast Wayne County (MS) this week, netting only 20 yards of rushing — coming on the last rush of the game for the team to seal the victory — and just 184 yards passing. It enters the showdown with Don Bosco as the higher-ranked team but it the eyes of most it could be the underdog. It lost eight spots in the HSFB100 and one inside MaxPreps but gained two points from the Freeman Computer.
21 (22)

107

Mainland (FL) 20 25 13 23 17
Mainland gained entry into the USAToday 25 as the No. 25 team replacing Flanagan in its poll. Mainland blanked Pine Ridge, 48-0. The team was pushed to the front of the line in Class 6A without much debate this week in rankings meeting — moreso because Miami Central struggled with Norland than anything Mainland did in this domination.
22 (18)

104

Clay-Chalkville (AL) 7 17 17 19
The Cougars gained two spots in the USAToday poll but dropped one in MaxPreps and outside of the Freeman model from No. 25. The Cougars is still far off the pace in the HSFB100 coming in at No. 34 in its placement this week. Clay-Chalkville crushed Pinson Valley, 65-10. It has really only had one poor performance this year but it has been quite hard to overcome in the HSFB100 and Freeman Computer.
23 (23)

83

Male (KY) 17 21 23 20
The Bulldogs moved up a spot or two in the four polls that have it ranked despite this being little more than checking the box. Male dominated a totally overmatched Seneca team this week with a 63-0 blowout. Male had 383 yards of offense and pushed Seneca for a negative-11 on the night. The game opened with a 59-yard touchdown pass on the first play of the game and then scored 23 more points in the first quarter.
24 (–)

78

St. Joseph (NJ) 19 15 11
The computers are liking the Green Knights more than the human pollsters as both have the team tucked well inside the rankings. The USAToday is on board with a No. 19 placement, too. It is hard to argue that the defense and the strength of schedule is impressive. It has a 17-7 win over Don Bosco (Ramsey, NJ), 22-20 over St. Edward (Lakewood, OH), and 20-7 on DePaul (Wayne, NJ). The offense leaves a lot to be desired but the wins are solid.
25 (24)

68

Jenks (OK) 18 25 12
Jenks had its game with Owasso canceled this week without a make-up date being announced which took away an evaluation opportunity. The team, theoretically, added some secondary points in the computers with Union (Tulsa, OK) crushing Broken Arrow (OK), 42-18, the week after Broken Arrow beat Coppell — a team that Cedar Hill just struggled with. It is a crazy daisy chain by computer rankings often work on touch points and that would tie them together.
Dropped From the Media Compilation Top 25:
