Torrens roars for Lions

In a career muffled by position changes and injuries, New Richmond senior Austin Torrens played his best game at a crucial time for New Richmond. The Lions quarterback and kicker took the sting out of a pesky Taylor Yellow Jackets squad in a tightly contested 33-25 win.

Torrens was the catalyst for New Richmond, rushing for two touchdowns, throwing for another, kicking two field goals and three extra points as he compiled 21 of New Richmond’s points in the contest.

“Austin Torrens played the best game of his career,” head coach Josh Stratton declared after the victory.

After a scoreless first quarter both teams found their grooves on offense. New Richmond took a 17-9 lead at halftime.

After intermission Taylor tied the game up on short run from Evan Lamb and a Kenaz Moore two-point conversion reception. With 3:12 left in the third stanza the Lions retook the lead on a long touchdown TJ Gelter.

Torrens pushed the game out of reach scoring the first 10 points of the fourth quarter with a run, the extra point the later his second field goal. That made the score 33-17 as new Richmond held on for its first win of the season.

“Our kids didn’t give in to the heat and prevailed in a great football game,” Stratton said.

New Richmond will take on CHCA next Friday. It will be the third straight home game to open the season for the Lions. Taylor hosts unbeaten Division II Turpin.
