Colerain’s GMC win streak hits 50

Colerain jumped out to a 20-0 lead at the end of the first quarter and cruised to a 34-0 victory over Lakota East for the Cardinals’ 50th consecutive GMC win on Friday night in Liberty Township.

Sophomore running back Gunnar Leyendecker and junior running back Monalo Caldwell ran for two touchdowns each for Colerain (7-1 overall, 5-0 Greater Miami Conference) and stayed on track to gain the Ohio Division I, Region 2 top seed when the postseason begins in three weeks.

Leyendecker scored both of his touchdowns in the first quarter, from 20- and 17-yards out, while Caldwell’s touchdowns covered 23 and six yards, the second coming in the third quarter and triggering the running clock when the lead reached 34-0. Junior defensive back Keontae Jones added a defensive touchdown, a 14-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown to make it 27-0 Cardinals midway through the second quarter.

Colerain outgained Lakota East (3-5, 1-4) 223-102, as both teams typically stayed largely on the ground. Colerain ran for 208 yards at nearly seven yards a carry, and held the Thunderhawks to just 87 yards on 39 carries.

Junior defensive back Amir Riep, senior linebacker Darryll Gardner, and Jones all recovered first half fumbles for the Cardinals.

Lakota East has now lost four straight after starting the year 3-1, and will try to get back into the winning column Friday when they travel to Princeton, while Colerain will go for their 51st straight GMC win when they host Hamilton on Thursday.
