Roundup: Cincinnati – Week 9
- Updated: October 24, 2015
Firebirds Go For The Nguyen – Lakota West beat Sycamore 38-36 on a last second 48-yard field goal by Jack Nguyen. The senior has been perfect this season going 37-37 on extra points and connecting on all three of his field goal attempts.
Will GMC Get Four In The Tournament – Colerain, Mason and Fairfield look like locks to get into the Division I, Region 2 playoffs. Lakota West is on the cusp of getting a berth but a favorable Greater Miami Conference schedule may keep them on the outside looking in. The Firebirds did not have to play Mason or Fairfield who are each 7-2. All five of Lakota West’s GMC wins have come against teams that are less than .500 on the season.
Division II, Region 6 Has Surprise Filled Friday – The docket was loaded with great battles for the Division II, Region 6 on Friday night and they did not disappoint.
Coming off a huge win over Elder, Winton Woods was playing its best football of the year only to see La Salle rain on that parade. A burst of 21 unanswered points in a 6:22 span of the third quarter by the Lancers left little doubt of who the best team in the state. La Salle handed the Warriors a 35-point loss and Jeremy Larkin scored four touchdowns for the sixth time in his last 13 games.
Miamisburg got its signature by snapping Division I Springboro’s seven game winning streak in a 35-32 thriller. It was a second straight three points win for the Vikings and fourth of the year by three points or less.
Loveland did what no other team has done against Turpin by scoring more than 20 points. The Tigers spoiled the Spartans quest for perfection, 32-18. In another ECC battle that pitted a pair of 7-1, 4-1 teams had Kings dominating Glen Este at the line of scrimmage. The Knights had three runners break the 100-yard mark as the team compiled 412 yards on the ground in a 31-point rout.
David Montgomery was too much for Edgewood to handle. The Mount Healthy quarterback ran the ball 19 times for 373 yards and six touchdowns on runs of 69, 19, 12, 23, 64 and 80 yards as the Division III Owls handed the Division II Cougars their second loss of the season, 50-14. Also in the SWOC Harrison won a nail-biter 31-28 at Northwest keeping their playoff hopes alive. It was the sixth win in the last seven games for the Wildcats after a 0-2 start. Harrison hosts Edgewood in a finale that has huge playoff implications in Region 6.
North College Hill 32, Summit Country Day 24 – It took almost two full quarters for North College Hill (3-6, 2-2) to grab its first lead of the night. Once the Trojans got on top they never let Summit Country Day (3-6, 0-4) back in the ball game. North College Hill churned out 304 yards on the ground and forced the Silver Knights into four turnovers. JuJuan Linzy led NCH with 164 yards and two scores. He also threw a touchdown pass to Dawayne Grissom. Teammate Franklin Steward added 116 yards and a pair of touchdowns on the ground. Joe Collins was a force for SCD running for 93 yards and a touchdown. He also had eight solo tackles to pace the Summit Country Day offense.
CHCA Chops Down Indians – The 30-game winning streak has come to an end for Cincinnati Country Day. CHCA wasted little time in sending a message to the Indians that they are still the team to beat in the Miami Valley Conference. The Eagles soared to a 59-27 victory and look like a team ready to make deep run in the Division V, Region 18 playoffs.
CHL Has Dream Finale Set – The Cincinnati Hill League couldn’t ask for anything better to end the season. Indian Hill host Reading with both teams coming in at 9-0 and 6-0 in the conference. No one foresaw this matchup for the CHL crown before the season started. A pair of pleasant surprises sees Indian Hill looking for its first title since 2008. That was the last of five straight CHL titles for the Braves. Their last playoff appearance was in ’07. Reading shared the CHL crown with Wyoming in ‘03 and won the league outright in ’02. The Blue Devils last made the post-season in ’06. That was the last of six playoff appearances in a seven year span for the program.
Senators Scoring at Will – Taft has caught fire winning six in a row. In the last five of those wins the Senators have scored at least 41 points. That is a huge leap from the team that averaged 14 points in the first three tilts to start the season. Taft is currently sitting at No. 9 in the current Division IV, Region 14 Harbin Ratings.
