St. Xavier falls to Warren Central
- Updated: October 16, 2015
Jaylen Coe scored three touchdowns, including the go ahead touchdown early in the fourth quarter, and the Warren Central Warriors survived a late rally and an onside kick recovery to hold off the St Xavier Bombers 28-21 Friday night in Indianapolis.
Coe, a 5-feet-6, 160-pound senior running back, did it all for the Warriors. He ran for 115 yards on 15 carries and two touchdowns, and caught six catches for 119 yards and another touchdown.
St. Xavier was led by running back Sean Prophit, who ran for 92 yards on 14 carries, including a 27-yard scamper with 3:48 left in the third quarter to tie the score at 14, rallying the Bombers from an 14-3 halftime deficit. Prophit’s touchdown was set up when quarterback Tristen Tonte’s pass was intercepted by Hayden Specht near the goal line and returned all the way back to the Warriors’ 43.
Quarterback Sean Clifford completed 18-of-35 passes for 218 yards, and his 16-yard touchdown pass to Brian Johnston made it 28-21 with 1:18 left in regulation. St X’s Anthony Zampese recovered the ensuing onside kick, and the Bombers moved the ball to the Warren Central 39, but a holding and personal foul penalties derailed the St Xavier last gasp effort.
One key stat on the night was Warren Central converting on 7 of 10 on third down, while St. Xavier converted 4 of 12.
St. Xavier still is on track for a top seed among Ohio Division 1, Region 2 teams when the post-season starts in three weeks, and will try to get back on the winning track next Saturday in Cleveland against St Ignatius.
