- Updated: January 25, 2016
Winning consistently has become the norm at Simon Kenton. In 2015, the Pioneers won a school record 13 games before falling at home to Lafayette in the Class 6A state semifinals. Head coach Jeff Marksberry has seen his troops become dedicated year round. It was the seventh time in the last eight seasons that Marksberry had led Simon Kenton to at least nine wins with six campaigns of 10 or more victories in that span. The only thing that has eluded the program is a state title but there is no doubt they are knocking on the door of that goal.
This senior class of Pioneers bows out having compiled a 36-4 record over the last three seasons. They also set the school record for wins twice. Since the In its last 100 games Simon Kenton has gone 76-24 dating back to the beginning of October, 2008. That includes a postseason mark of 17-8.
An explosive offense paced the Pioneers. Simon Kenton scored 41 points or more nine times in its first 11 victories. They averaged 39.9 points on the season. The unit was paced by RB Dillon Powell and QB Cameron Racke. Senior Powell ran for 1,730 yards with 23 touchdowns on his way to being the NKFCA Player of the Year. Junior Racke accounted for 2,807 yards of total offense (1,824 passing, 983 rushing) and 34 total touchdowns (17, passing, 17 rushing). Both players are finalists for the 2015 TriStateFootball.com Kentucky Offensive Player of the Year award.
The defense really hit its stride after Week 2 giving up 15 points or fewer in each of the team’s next nine victories. The group was led by seniors DL Tucker Mueller, LB Dalton Finnell, LB Brian Carter and junior DB Trent Kincaid. Mueller and Kincaid are finalists for the 2015 TriStateFootball.com Kentucky Defensive Player of the Year award.
