Harrison stuns Anderson in final seconds
- Updated: September 10, 2016
It was hot and muggy at Brown Stadium on Friday night, but the heat didn’t get to the Harrison Wildcats, as they were able to pull out with the win on the road, knocking off the Anderson Redskins 48-47 on a last second field goal to nab their first win of the season.
After Anderson went up 47-38 with 5:39 left to play in the game, the Wildcats drove down the field with no timeouts remaining in an attempt to make it a one possession game. The drive ended in a 38-yard touchdown pass from Harrison quarterback Frankie Young to Mitchell Crawford to put the Wildcats within two with 3:51 left to play.
The Redskins were attempting to run down the clock as much as they could by running the ball, but were eventually forced to punt, allowing Harrison one final drive to win the game.
Some flashy plays and an Anderson defensive penalty later, the Wildcats found themselves at the Anderson 10-yard line with three seconds left to play. Kicker Kyle Farfsing nailed the kick through the goal posts as time expired, giving Harrison its first win of the season.
Harrison Head Coach Kent McCullough applauded his team for keeping its composure down the stretch and making the big plays to win.
“We’ve practiced a two-minute drill every day in practice, especially on Thursdays, so the kids are used to it and it was unique with no timeouts,” McCullough said. “The kids were prepared for it, the coaches were prepared for it, so as much of a chaotic situation, the kids were calm and went down and made plays.”
Young said that he trusted his teammates in the final touchdown drive and had no doubt that his coaches would put the team in the best situation to win.
“I went through my reads that we’ve been practicing all week, and it just turned out the right way,” Young said.
The game started in Anderson’s favor, leading 21-7 at the end of the first quarter. Redskins quarterback Jay Volpenhein threw two touchdown passes and Kyle Blaha ran for a touchdown in the first quarter.
Harrison began a comeback in the second quarter with a 32-yard pass from Young to Crawford, pulling within one touchdown of the Redskins.
After the Harrison defense causes Blaha to fumble on the next drive, the Harrison offense took over and scored again on a 57-yard pass from Young to Nick Vanderpohl, and the game was tied at 21 with three minutes left in the first half.
Both teams would each score a touchdown before the half, going into the locker room tied at 28.
The Wildcats took their first lead of the game out of the locker room on a 22-yard field goal by Farfsing to give Harrison the 31-28 edge.
Anderson would respond with Volpenhein tossing a touchdown pass to Amadez Jones from two yards out to go up 35-31.
On the first play of Harrison’s next offensive drive, Young dropped a pass right into the hands of Vanderpohl for the 67-yard score to go back up by three points as the third quarter minutes were winding down.
However, before the clock struck triple zeros for the third quarter, Volpenhein found Jake Newton on a one-yard touchdown pass to give another edge to the Redskins.
The final score for Anderson before Harrison scored the final points for the win was six-yard touchdown pass from Volpenhein to Jones to go up 47-38, leading up to the Harrison comeback touchdown drive and field goal drive to win it.
“There’s nothing better,” Young said of the win. “I was very worried, I’m an emotional guy and just to get out there and play football with a bunch of these guys that I worked my butt off with all summer and to come out with the win is the greatest feeling in the world.”
Young went 34-for-46 for 501 yards and six touchdown passes for Harrison. Vanderpohl caught half of Young’s touchdown passes, while also racking up 231 yards on 14 receptions. Mitchell Crawford (2) and Gerald Smith (1) caught the other touchdown passes for Harrison.
Anderson was led on offense by Volpenhein who went 31-for-50 with 370 yards and six touchdown passes. Volpenhein also rushed for another 113 yards. Jones caught half of Volpenhein’s touchdown throws, while also accumulating 98 yards on eight receptions.
Harrison (1-2) will begin SWOC play next week on the road when it takes on the Ross Rams. Like Harrison, Ross has faced a team from the Eastern Cincinnati Conference this season, losing to Walnut Hills 35-7 in Week 2.
Anderson (2-1) will also hit the road next week as the Redskins begin ECC play against Kings. Kings, always a favorite to win the ECC title, also lost its first game of the season on Friday night, losing 34-27 to Hamilton.
