La Salle wards off Winton Woods
- Updated: September 23, 2016
La Salle did not score a point in the first half, but the 20 the Lancers rolled up in the first half were just enough in a 20-13 win over Winton Woods on Friday.
The victory snapped a two-game losing streak for La Salle, during which the team notched just 18 points.
The Warriors took the early lead, just 3:43 in on a 6-yard pass from Kenny Mayberry to Raequan Prince.
But the Lancers answered just 69 seconds later, as Christian Turner caught a 61-yard throw from Griffin Merritt.
Merritt and Turner hooked up again from 23 yards out seven seconds into the second quarter, giving La Salle its first lead, 13-7.
Jarell White ran an interception back 55 yards to extend La Salle’s lead to 13 late in the second quarter, giving the Lancers their final points.
Mayberry threw a 45-yard TD pass to Jamir Thompson midway through the third quarter, but the Lancers’ defense shut down Winton Woods the rest of the way.
The Warriors led in total yardage, 262-205, including 141 on the ground. Mayberry was 14 of 28 for 122 yards and two scores.
Cornell Beachum led Winton Woods in rushing yards with 70, and he caught four passes.
Merritt finished 10-for-16 for 122 yards and two touchdowns, with Turner catching five for 115.
La Salle, which will host Moeller in its GCL South opener next week, held the Warriors to 1-for-13 on third down.
The Warriors will also be home, as they will face Indianapolis Bishop Chatard.
