Simon Kenton scores 77 vs. Highlands

Simon Kenton remained unbeaten, but its defensive numbers took a major hit.

In a game that saw 83 points scored in the first half, the Pioneers pulled away after the break for a 77-53 win over Highlands on Friday.

The teams combined for 1,394 yards, with Simon Kenton accounting for 752. The Pioneers entered Friday allowing 16.4 points and 247.8 yards per game.

Simon Kenton led by one at halftime, 42-41. The teams combined for 15 possessions in the first half and found the end zone 12 times.

But Pioneers QB Cameron Racke threw a 65-yard TD pass to Sam Murray, and later in the quarter, Racke broke a 60-yard scoring run to extend the lead to 15.

The Pioneers led by at least nine for the rest of the game.

Racke was 17-for-21 for 273 yards and six touchdowns, and teammate Matt Shearer finished 7 of 10 for 215 yards and another TD, giving Simon Kenton 488 passing yards on the night. Racke also ran for a team-best 130 yards.

Sam Murray caught six passes for 169 yards and two touchdowns, and Luke Murray ended the night with five receptions for 167 yards and three scores.

For Highlands, Brady Gosney was 29 of 44 for 394 yards and four TDs. Jared Pulsfort rushed for 116 yards and Grant Murray 106, and Nick Veneman caught four passes for 141 yards and three scores.

The Pioneers – off to a 6-0 start with 17 straight regular season wins – will host Boone County next week.

The Bluebirds, who have now given up 280 points (46.7 PPG) and lost five straight, travel to Dixie Heights.
