CovCath snaps streak vs. Highlands

Covington Catholic finally ended its drought against Highlands and did so in blowout fashion.
The Colonels scored five straight touchdowns in a quarter-plus en route to a 63-26 win over the Bluebirds on Friday.
Highlands had won its last 15 meetings vs. CovCath, with its last loss to the Colonels coming in 2006, 25-15 in the second round of the postseason.
Casey McGinness rushed 17 times for 225 yards and two touchdowns, and QB A.J. Mayer added 168 ground yards and four scores on 16 carries. Overall the Colonels gained 505 rushing yards and averaged over 10 yards per attempt.
They won the overall yardage battle, 595-451.
Grant Murray led the Bluebirds in rushing with 124 yards, and he scored one TD. Brady Gosney was 27 of 49 passing for 288 yards and a pair of scores.
Highlands’ Braden Posey caught a game-high nine passes for 93 yards and a touchdown in the losing effort.
Mayer scored all three first-quarter touchdowns to make it 21-0, and Anthony Best and McGinness found the end zone early in the second quarter to make it a five-score game.
With the win, CovCath – winners of six of its last seven – locked up home-field advantage for the first round of the Class 5A playoffs. The Colonels are 2-0 in their conference and will host Dixie Heights for the title next week.
The Bluebirds dropped to 0-2 in Class 5A and travels to Grant County, needing a win there to avoid finishing last in the conference. They have lost seven games in a row after winning their season opener.
