Mason out muscles Princeton

MASON, ohio – A smothering defense and a relentless rushing attack helped Mason get back in the win column after being upset by Lakota East a week earlier. The Comets used their strength up front to overpower Princeton sending the Vikings to a third straight loss.

Mason broke open a scoreless game with a pair of rushing touchdowns by Cameron Buford and Michael Kopaygorodsky in the second quarter. They would take a 14-0 lead into halftime and never look back.

Kopaygorodsky was at it again after intermission scoring on a one-yard run for the game’s only score in the third stanza. The senior would finish the night with a season high 131 yards on 14 carries and the two touchdowns. The Comets ran the ball 42 times for 269 yards. Junior Matt Sora chipped in with 78 yards on 14 totes.

Princeton did not find the end zone until there was seven seconds left in the contest when Solomon Reed connected with Rafael Floyd on a 29-yard pass play. It was a too little, too late for a Vikings squad that could only muster 62 yards on the ground on 35 carries.

The Mason defense was led by University of Kentucky commit, Alex King. The senior was dominate getting in on 10 solo tackles, assisting on four others and registering two-and-a-half sacks.

Both teams are still alive in the playoff hunt but need to win in their regular season finales to keep the flame burning. Princeton is at winless Middletown (0-9, 0-6). Mason travels to Sycamore (5-4, 4-2) who spoiled the Comets postseason bid two years ago in Week 10.
