NewCath holds off late Lloyd rally
- Updated: October 14, 2016
Newport Central Catholic scored the first four touchdowns and survived a late Lloyd run in a 28-18 win on Friday.
QB Patrick Henschen ran in a pair of TDs in the first quarter from 12 and 21 yards out, and Kyle Kelly added one in the third quarter and another early in the fourth to make it a four-score game.
But the Juggernauts recovered three on-side kicks, and Lloyd Fann three threw three TD passes – including two the Lashunn Townsend – to cut the final deficit to 10.
The Thoroughbreds clinched first place in Class 2A with a 2-0 record, having beaten both Lloyd and Holy Cross who are 1-1 in district play. They will wrap up their district schedule at Newport next week.
Lloyd travels to Holy Cross, and the winner of that game will earn home-field advantage for the first round of the playoffs.
