Wyoming wallops Madeira
- Updated: October 7, 2016
Wyoming used a combination of a stifling defense and an explosive offense to blowout Madeira 57-0.
The Cowboys (7-0) jumped out to an early 21-0 lead in the first quarter and did not look back as the Wyoming defense recorded its third-straight shutout.
Wyoming’s offense started the scoring, going out and reaching the end zone on their first drive of the game, when quarterback Andrew Marty connected with wide receiver Garyn Prater on a 47-yard touchdown pass.
The defense scored the next two touchdowns, returning back-to-back interceptions, gaining a three-score lead with over two minutes left in the first quarter.
“The defense is doing a great job,” said Wyoming head coach Aaron Hancock. “Defensive coordinator Chad Seymour does a phenomenal job getting these guys ready. Our coaching staff is prepping these young guys to play their style of defense and they’re aggressive and they get after it, so very pleased with that.”
Overall, the defense intercepted Madeira’s (5-2) quarterback Jacob Bellayuto three times and scored once more later in the second half on a safety.
The Mustangs were held to only 136 total yards on 43 plays, equaling just over three yards per play.
The Cowboy offense scored twice on Madeira in the second quarter to increase their already large lead to 35-0 at halftime.
Marty was accountable for both scores in the period, running one touchdown in from 61 yards and connecting with wide receiver Jake Edmonds from 17 yards out for the second.
On the night, Marty had four total touchdowns, three in the air and one on the ground.
“We had a great game overall,” Marty said. “Offensive line did a great job, defense obviously scored two or three times and you just got to give credit where credit’s due. Our guys played great and it makes it easy on my part.”
Marty threw for 179 yards on 17-of-22 passing, increasing his season total to 1,584 passing yards on 101-of-168 passing. In addition, he has scored 26 total touchdowns on the season ― 19 through the air ― and has only thrown four interceptions.
The second half was much of the same as Wyoming scored four more times before game’s end and their defense continued to hold Madeira in check.
Marty again found Prater in the end zone during the third quarter, giving Prater his second touchdown of the game ― his third-straight game catching two touchdowns.
“Garyn does a phenomenal job, this is actually only his second year playing football, varsity football,” Hancock said. “He’s really worked very hard in the offseason to perfect his craft and he’s done a great job and his physical size over some defensive backs is very good, so he takes advantage of it.”
Marty also had high praise for one of his top-targets.
“Garyn is a special, special wide receiver,” Marty said. “That kid’s got the talent and skill to be a big-time division one wide receiver, so it’s fun having him on our side.”
On the season, Prater now has 545 receiving yards on 26 receptions and has scored 11 touchdowns.
Wyoming plays Finneytown in their next game at home 7 p.m. on Oct. 14. Finneytown is winless on the season, losing to Indian Hill 72-0 in their last game.
“We just got to work on getting better,” Hancock said. “It doesn’t matter who we’re playing, we have got to get better every single week. We’re focused on just being the best that we can be in practice, best we can be as a teammate, best we can be as a player and as a team, that’s all we’re focused on.
Marty has a specific area in his game he plans on working on before his team’s matchup with Finneytown.
“I think I can work on just better completion percentage,” Marty said. “They’re doing a great job, we just got to get better overall.”
Wyoming remains in first place in the Cincinnati Hills League standings with the win. Madeira dropped to third place behind Indian Hill, despite winning five-straight games prior to the loss.
The Mustangs will have an opportunity to make noise in the standings as they play at Indian Hill in their next matchup at 7 p.m. Oct. 14.
