NewCath dominates Lloyd, 48-14
- Updated: November 12, 2016
Two longtime rivals met again this week in the KHSAA Class 2A playoffs, as the Lloyd Memorial Juggernauts fell to the Newport Central Catholic Thoroughbreds, 48-14.
Lloyd (6-6) turned the ball over twice in the first eight minutes of the game, which allowed NewCath (7-5) to score two easy touchdowns to open up the game in their favor.
With just under a minute left to go in the first half, NewCath QB Pat Henschen found Kuke Moeves for a four-yard TD pass to expand his team’s lead to 28-7.
Henschen finished the night going 8 of 11, passing for 104 yards and three touchdowns, while also scoring a rushing touchdown.
While the Juggernauts had more first downs, 16 to 12, they were out gained on the field in total offense, 313-260.
With NewCath attempting to reach it’s fifth straight state championship game, they needed big performances from their star players.
RB Kyle Kelly ran for 117 yards on 22 carries for the Thoroughbreds, while LB Curtis Sutkamp came up big on defense with a 47-yard fumble recovery that he ran back for a touchdown.
Lloyd RB Travon Mason led his team with 111 rushing yards on 25 carries. WR Lashunn Townsend also played well for his team, hauling in 75 receiving yards on five catches to go along with a touchdown.
Up next, NewCath, ranked number eight in Kentucky, will face Holy Cross, ranked number nine, in next Friday’s regional final game.
