Centerville steals win at Fairfield
- Updated: August 26, 2017
Centerville Elks win opener under new head coach Brent Ullery, 30-23, against Fairfield at Fairfield High School on Friday night.
Ullery has been on the Elks coaching staff since 2014, but recorded his first win as the team’s new head coach.
The Elks offense started strong as they scored just under 10 minutes into the game. Quarterback senior Alec Grandin found junior J.R. Melzer on a 17-yard touchdown pass. Two minutes later, senior Donovan Shelton intercepted a Jeff Tyus pass and returned the interception for a 30-yard score to extend the lead to 13-0.
Fairfield fought back early in the second quarter when the junior quarterback found sophomore Juthan McClain on a 37-yard pass for the Indians first score of 2017. Fairfield was able to convert the two-point conversion to narrow the lead to 16-8. On the next possession McClain ran the endzone himself when he ran in for a 12-yard touchdown. Once again Fairfield converted the two-point attempt to tie the game at 16.
The game was only tied for a minute, as Grandin threw an 80-yard touchdown strike to junior Jake Spiewak to give them a touchdown lead. With the help of the 80-yard possession, Spiewak finished the game with 100 receiving yards.
The Elks defense were able to shutdown the Fairfield offense in the second half. Both teams swapped touchdowns, but that was the only scoring in the second half.
Grandin threw the football 25 times and completed 15 of those passes for 205 yards and two touchdowns. He also had 50 yards on the ground and ran for a touchdown in the fourth quarter.
Senior Jake Rankey led the Elks in rushing with 61 yards on 19 attempts.
The veteran defense was dominate with the help of junior Max Wynn and senior Don Ramsey. The junior linebacker made 11 tackles and one sack. Ramsey finished with seven tackles.
Tyus had that one error in the first half when he threw the interception that was returned for a score, but he settled down and threw for 165 yards and a touchdown. Junior Erick All and senior Chico Robinson were top targets for Tyus as All led the team with six receptions for 62 yards, and Robinson tallied 49 yards. Robinson also had four rushing attempts for 59 yards. McClain also helped in both the rushing and passing game as he totaled 66 totals to go along with his two rushing touchdowns.
Centerville controlled the time of possession as the Elks had the football for over 30 minutes compared to only 17 minutes for Fairfield.
Now Fairfield will head to the Dayton area next Friday to play Northmont before opening conference play in Week 3 against Lakota West. Last season Fairfield defeated Northmont at home, 27-13.
Next Friday, Centerville will drive back down I-75 to Lakota West for its second straight game against a GMC opponent. If it was anything like last season, both Centerville and Lakota West were at midseason form on the offensive side of the football. The Elks were able to score 52 points and defeat the Firebirds, 52-35, at home.
