Conner holds off NewCath
- Updated: September 22, 2017
Conner took a 22-point lead into the fourth quarter and held on for a 35-27 win over Newport Central Catholic on Friday.
Matt Simpson returned the opening kickoff 85 yards to put the Cougars ahead. They would lead the entire game.
The Thoroughbreds did score later in that quarter but missed their extra point.
A 3-yard Trevor Courts run and 7-yard catch by Jared Hicks extended Conner’s lead to 15, and after NCC made it a one-score game, Cooper Guillon ran in a 3-yard score to make it 28-13 at halftime.
Jaylen Watkins punched in a 22-yard run in the third quarter to give the Cougars a 35-13 advantage.
Guillon was 14 of 17 for 113 yards and one touchdown, and he also rushed for 49 yards and a TD. Watkins caught six passes for 74 yards and a score, and Courts racked up a team-best 59 ground yards plus a touchdown.
Conner improves to 3-2, and four of its five games have been decided by one score. The Thoroughbreds dropped to 3-3 and have lost three of four.
The Cougars host Lloyd next week while NewCath is off next week before opening district play at Holy Cross.
