Colerain Wins GMC Opener
- Updated: September 7, 2018
Colerain opens GMC play with a 47-19 win against Princeton at home Friday night.
The Cardinals started off slow in the sloppy rain conditions after trailing early in the first quarter, but senior quarterback Deante Smith-Moore took over and continued to have an impressive season. The rain could not stop the senior quarterback as he had 235 yards rushing and five touchdowns. He also threw a touchdown pass.
Smith-Moore opened the scoring for the Cardinals on a 3-yard touchdown after senior J.J. Davis returned a kickoff 66 yards to give Colerain great field position on the Princeton 35.
He extended the lead to 14-6 on a 14-yard run that was setup on a Princeton turnover. The Vikings misplayed the punt, and Colerain recovered on the Princeton 21-yard line.
His third touchdown came in the second quarter with just over five minutes left when he sprinted down the field 44-yards to the endzone to go up 14 points after the extra point was blocked, making it 20-6.
Princeton was able to get within six going into halftime when senior quarterback Hosea Hairston found senior Jermaine Wimpye on a 33-yard touchdown pass.
That was as close as the Vikings would get as Colerain took control of the second half. Senior Ivan Pace Jr. got into the scoring on a 6-yard run after another long run by Smith-Moore.
Colerain’s Deshawn Pace forced and recovered a fumble on Princeton’s ensuing possession, which turned into Smith-Moore’s fourth touchdown of the night.
The Cardinals finished the game with 346 rushing yards on 49 carries.
The defense was led by Pace, Luke Bolden, and Michael Bess who all recorded seven tackles., and helped hold Princeton to only 201 yards.
Colerain continues GMC play next week at home against Middletown, and Princeton is home to conference-rival Lakota East.
