Kings wins as time expires, beats Turpin 37-34

The Kings Knights were able to defeat the Turpin Spartans tonight in a tightly contested ECC matchup, one which may have also been the best game of week five.

Both teams were 3-1 heading into this week, each looking to secure first place in the conference moving forward.

Kings kicked off the scoring with a 34-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Ashton Koller to sophomore Gabe Hunt.

Turpin responded quickly though with a 1-yard touchdown run by junior Reece Evans, evening the score at 7-7 with 6:06 left in the first quarter.

The Spartans took the lead on a Miles Molloy 37-yard field goal towards the end of the first. Molloy, a junior, kicked two field goals in Turpin’s 19-16 win over West Clermont last week, one from 28-yards out and another from 34.

Kings regained the lead in the second quarter after a 5-yard touchdown run by Koller, only to have senior Thomas Mitchell miss the extra point. The Knights still led though 13-10, and continued to roll.

Senior running back Nak’emon Williams ran for a 15-yard touchdown, giving the Knights some breathing room at 20-10 with 5:47 left in the second quarter.

Turpin bounced back just minutes later, as it was Evans again who found the endzone, this time from 3-yards out.

With one second left before halftime, Kings found a way to add to their score thanks to a 4-yard touchdown pass form Koller to junior Jack McHugh. They took a 27-17 lead into the half.

Once back on the field, it seemed as though the Knights would run away with the game. Williams recorded a 51-yard rushing touchdown to make it 34-17 Kings with 9:48 left in the third quarter.

The Spartans refused to quit though, and they began their uphill battle to take the lead once again with another 1-yard touchdown rush by Evans within the last minute of the third.

Turpin continued to claw their way back with a 5-yard touchdown pass from Justin Silverstein to Logan Jilek at the 6:02 mark in the fourth quarter, closing the gap on the scoreboard and making it just 34-31 in favor of Kings.

Then, with just 0:30 left in the game, the Spartans tied it at 34 with after a Molloy 28-yard field goal.

A defensive stop and momentum was all Turpin needed to escape with an overtime win, but Mitchell redeemed himself and his extra point miss from earlier by sinking a 46-yard field goal as time expired to give Kings the 37-34 victory.

Williams and Evans both topped the stat sheet for their respective teams. Williams had 156 yards and two touchdowns on 23 carries for Kings, while Evans finished with 142 yards and three touchdowns on 31 carries.

Koller threw for 200 yards on 18/31 passing for two touchdowns and an interception. 63 of those yards were caught by Kings senior Jacob Elam on six receptions.

Silverstein a nearly identical night, throwing 20/29 for 213 yards, with one touchdown and one interception. It was 5’4″ senior Cody Kidd who reeled in the most receiving yards, snagging six receptions for 88 yards.

After starting 1-4 overall last year and 0-2 in ECC play, the Knights are sure to be pleased with their standing this year after week five, and are sure to make some noise throughout Cincinnati as the season goes on.
