Winton Woods Extends Win Streak to Seven Games
- Updated: October 12, 2018
Behind running back Miyan Williams, Winton Woods helps playoff resume with a 28-10 win over Elder slips passed Winton Woods in a non-conference game Friday night.
Williams scored two touchdowns in the second half to help ignite the Warriors offense in the second half.
Elder started the game’s scoring four minutes into the game when Michael Brittner found Matt Luebbe on a 38-yard touchdown pass. Winton Woods answered on the next possession on a long 48-yard pass from MiChale Wingfield to Rashaun Brown.
Elder’s kicker Sam Harmeyer broke the tie with eight minutes left in the half to make the score 10-7. That was the score at halftime after teams traded punts for the rest of the quarter. Winton Woods outgained Elder, 206-189 in the first half, but only found the endzone once.
Despite the cold and rain, the Warriors offense started to heat up in the second half. With five minutes left in the third quarter Williams scored on a one-yard carry to take a 14-10 lead and never trailed again.
The next Winton Woods scoring drive was setup on the Elder 41 when Malcolm Bryant blocked a punt with just over 10 minutes left in the game. Williams found the endzone on a 20-yard run for his 23rd touchdown on the season.
The game was put out of reach after Tyquan Fleming intercepted an Elder pass in the endzone to end any type of momentum the Panthers had left. After the interception, Wingfield broke a 30-yard run with three minutes left to give the Warriors an 18-point lead and the win.
The Winton Woods defense was able to shutout one of the top offenses in the second half. Winton Woods senior Anthony Booker was one of those reasons as he had numerous sacks on the night, included sacks on back-to-back plays.
Now Elder will play a non-conference game next week at home against St. John Vianney (Kirkwood, MO). Winton Woods will play a home game against St. Francis de Sales (Columbus, OH).
