Colerain Routs St. Xavier in Division I Playoffs

Behind seniors Deante Smith-Moore and Ivan Pace, Colerain cruises to a 35-9-win Friday in the first round of the Division I playoffs.

Smith-Moore rushed for 220 yards and two touchdowns, and Pace Jr. added 58 yards on 11 carries to go with two scores. The Cardinals combined to rush for 319 yards and all five touchdowns.

The first offensive of the night for Colerain resulted in a safety when Syncere Jones was stopped in the endzone after St. Xavier punted to the 1-yard-line on its first drive. After that miscue, Colerain was able to get the offensive in gear and scored 35 straight points.

The defense held the Bombers scoreless until the fourth quarter when they allowed 30-yard touchdown pass from Matthew Rueve to Chris Payne. The senior running back scored the team’s only touchdown in the air but added 136 yards on the ground.

Colerain controlled the entire game and took a 21-2 lead into halftime and extended the lead on the first play from scrimmage in the second half when Smith-Moore broke an 80-yard touchdown run to push the lead to 28-2.

This is St. Xavier’s first losing season since 2013 when they finished 5-6 and finished the season with a first round loss to Moeller. This was the second loss to Colerain after losing 14-12 in Week 2. The Bombers were able to hold Smith-Moore to only 40 rushing yards in the previous meeting.

Colerain will play Milford next week in the Division I, Region 4 semi-finals. Milford was down 35-7 and stunned Fairfield 39-35 Friday night.
