Coaching Changes: New faces, in new places
- Updated: August 22, 2019
Coaches come and go, but what happened after last season became one of the more intriguing, eye-popping moves that the area has seen in more than a decade. It is a storyline that has made what is to come this fall such a savory nugget.
After 12 years of incredible success, head coach Tom Bolden left his alma mater to take the same position at league rival, Lakota West. Bolden went 132-21 at Colerain, including a trip to the state finals last season.
Why Lakota West? The Firebirds have won just eight games over the past three campaigns. For Bolden, like many coaches, it was about the challenge and let’s face it, a pay raise. Now he gets the opportunity of waking a sleeping giant from its slumber in West Chester.
Long time assistant Shawn Cutright got promoted from his defensive coordinator position to take Bolden’s place at Colerain. Cutright was hired by Kerry Combs. The “Colerain Way” should not miss a beat.
Three of the 10 schools in the GMC will have new coaches pacing the sidelines this fall, including Nate Mahon also taking over the reigns at Hamilton.
Other successful programs that should not miss a beat after hiring assistants to take over at the helm are East Central with Jake Meiners, Kings with Alex Garvin and Moeller with Todd Naumann. Continuity and familiarity are so important when you have changes with schools that are so accustomed to winning.
Tall tasks await Mahon (Hamilton) and Bryson Warner (Boone County), who hope to resurrect programs at their alma maters. Warner, who has been an assistant at Covington Catholic the past several years, before that he went 73-58 in 11 seasons at Ryle. Mahon comes back home after leading Little Miami to its first playoff appearance in 26 years in 2018.
