NKY Round-Up: CovCath rolls Beechwood
- Updated: September 20, 2019
Covington Catholic took care of business Friday night, handing their Dixie Highway rivals a defeat for the fifth consecutive time.
The Colonels outgained the Tigers by a 428 to 72 margin in total offense and have outscored Beechwood by a total of 278-57 since the last time the Tigers beat them in 2014.
Caleb Jacob completed 10-of-12 passes for 183 yards and three touchdowns. Daniel Felix caught a 36-yard touchdown and finished with eight carries for 82 yards before he headed to the bench in the blowout.
Michael Boydsto netted 69 yards and a pair of touchdowns on three carries and he added a 4-yard receiving touchdown in the route.
Zach Allen paced the defense with a pair of sacks. The unit has now held four of its five opponents to three points or less, including three shoutouts.
The Colonels head back home next week with the first of three straight games at Wooten Field as they host Cooper. The Tigers will look rebound as they welcome Taft in an interstate clash.
No. 12 Highlands 27, No. 23 Ryle 0
Early on things were close, but as the game got going so did Highlands as they knocked off Ryle on a special night in Fort Thomas.
Things were emotional before the game as Highlands welcomed the 2019 inductees into the school’s Hall of Fame, including the late Jared Lorenzen, who passed away earlier this summer. Former head coach Dale Mueller and former tight Derek Smith, a teammate of Lorenzen at both Highlands and Kentucky, were also honored.

The Bluebirds got out to a 14-0 first half lead behind a pair of Collin Hollingsworth TD passes. The first went 18 yards to Joey Deschler with 1:08 mark in the first quarter. Midway through the second quarter it would be Hunter Ahfeld that would pull in a 21-yard TD pass of his own.
Highlands would pad the lead in the third quarter when xx Sawyer recovered a blocked punt in the end zone. Later in the quarter Ahfeld would pull in his second scoring pass of the night on a 4-yard pass from Hollingsworth (kick failed) to round out the scoring.
Newport Central Catholic 50, Holy Cross 14
The Thoroughbreds turned in their best effort of the season as they breezed the Indians on Friday night. NewCath scored 26 first-quarter points and led 43-0 at the half.
Quarterback Paul Kremer accounted for a bunch of that production with five passing touchdowns before the break. The senior completed 10-of-11 passes for 284 yards. Cody Mueller pulled in three of those scoring passes as he finished with 127 yards.
NewCath held a plus two margin in turnovers and finished with 389 yards of total offense, most of which came before halftime. The ‘Breds have now won two straight games and will open up district play next week at Newport. Holy Cross fell for the four straight week after an opening-season win and heads to Bishop Brossart.
