CovCath breezes past Conner for district title
- Updated: October 25, 2019
HEBRON, Kentucky – The Covington Catholic Colonels had little trouble at all in its season finale defeated the Conner Cougars 45-7 at Fred Nevel Stadium. The offensive explosion marked the eighth game of the season that the Colonels scored 30 or more points.
The win clinches another district title and the Colonels third consecutive 10-0 regular season.
CovCath took the ball first and jumped all over the Cougars. Despite having an 87-yard touchdown catch by Michael Mayer called back on a holding penalty, a 75-yard score by Mayer stood just a few plays later.
Mayer, a Notre Dame commitment as a tight end, was stellar on both sides of the ball. Mayer finished with five receptions for a game high 148 yards and two touchdowns.
On defense Mayer made a bone jarring tackle, one of four on the night, on a short pass play over the middle. He followed that by covering a wide receiver on a deep route making a leaping interception.
A 30-yard field goal by Trey Gronotte gave the Colonels a 24-0 lead midway through the second quarter.
Conner looked like it had found success against the vaunted CovCath defense. The Cougars put together a 10-play, 80 yard drive that culminated in a 12-yard touchdown run by quarterback Jared Hicks with 2:18 left before halftime.
The Colonels responded with three touchdowns in the last 1:05 of the second quarter to trigger the running clock and put the Cougars out of its misery.
The Covington Catholic offense, lead by junior Caleb Jacob who went 13-for-21 for 305 yards and four touchdowns, gained a total of 547 yards.
Daniel Felix ran for 134 yards on the ground on just nine carries. Michael Boydston gained just 17 yards on seven carries but scored two touchdowns.
Ethan Reardon also shined in the passing game catching four passes for 119 yards and two scores.
Conner, who had its six-game winning streak snapped gained just 204 yards and where held to just 49 rushing yards. The Cougars were forced in to a pair of turnovers, the Mayer interception and a fumble that was recovered by Jake Raisbeck.
