NKY Round-Up: Highlands slips past Cooper
- Updated: October 26, 2019
When #20 Highlands (6-4, 2-2) has been good this season their defense has starred. That was the case again on Friday night as they got past Cooper (5-5, 1-3), 14-7. The Bluebirds only allowed more than 20 points twice all season. It was the fourth time that the Jaguars have been held to seven points or less.
Highlands has had scoring woes down the stretch. The Bluebirds have been held to 17 points or fewer four times in their last five outings. They averaged 34.4 in their first five contests.
Both teams are finished with their regular season. They now wait for the conclusion of Week 10 and for their playoff assignments.
No.3 Covington Catholic 45, No.18 Conner 7
It was a historical night for the Covington Catholic (10-0, 4-0) football program. The Colonels rolled to a 45-7 win at Conner (7-2, 3-1) to cap off a third straight perfect regular season. Cov Cath also captured the Class 5A, District 5 title. The loss snapped a six game winning streak by the Cougars.
It was another night of sheer domination for Covington Catholic. They racked up 547 yards of total offense on just 50 plays. Most of that came in the first half as the Colonels built a 45-7 lead by intermission. The second half was played on a running clock. CovCath has held nine opponents to seven points or fewer.
Junior quarterback Caleb Jacob threw for 305 yards with a pair of touchdown passes to Michael Mayer and Ethan Reardon. Mayer had five receptions for 148 yards and an interception on defense. His two scores upped his season total to 11 touchdowns receiving. Reardon snared four balls for 118 yards.
The ground game was equally sound for CovCath. Daniel Felix carried the ball nine times for 134 yards. Michael Boydston found the end zone on a pair of short runs for the victors.
There weren’t many highlights for Conner. Senior quarterback Jared Hicks ran for the teams only score and finished with 155 yards passing. The Cougars look to regroup as they host George Rogers Clark in their regular season finale next Friday night.
Holmes 50, Scott 36
It was a rocky start and an incredibly bumpy ride but Holmes (5-3, 3-0) outlasted Scott (6-2, 2-1), 50-36 to win the Class 4A, District 6 title. It was the program’s first crown since 2009. The Bulldogs have won four in a row after starting the year 2-3.
It took Holmes midway through the second quarter to get their first lead. Then it became all about staving of a pesky Eagles squad.
The Bulldogs built a 44-22 lead with 5:51 left in the game. Scott would proceed to score 14 points in the next 2:06 to cut the lead to 44-36. Holmes showed resilience and put the game away with a late score with just under two minutes left to ice the contest.
