Saturday Round-Up: Wyoming wins again
- Updated: November 17, 2019
The road to a repeat for the Wyoming Cowboys in OHSAA Division IV has many familiar foes on it, including CHL counterpart Indian Hill. The two long-time rivals faced off for the second time in three weeks on Saturday at Princeton High School with a trip to the Region 16 championship on the line.
In Week 10, things were close to the end with Wyoming prevailing by three points and for the game’s first 24 minutes the Week 12 rematch would follow suit. However, the second half was a much different story as the Cowboys produced 21 unanswered points to seal the deal and end the Braves’ season.
This contest was scoreless until a 65-yard punt return for a touchdown by Indian Hill’s Tre Lopez gave the Braves a 7-0 lead. Wyoming would remain scoreless until the final minute of the first half when Evan Prater connected on a 2-yard TD pass to Cooper Kadish with 30 seconds left in the quarter.
Indian Hill only had nine offensive plays in the first half, yet were tied at the break. They wouldn’t hold on. Following a fumble by the Braves, Prater gave the Cowboys the lead for good a 1-yard TD run with 7:26 left in the third quarter. He would close out the game with two more scoring scampers from five and six yards out.
With the win Wyoming advances to face Valley View next week in the state’s Round of 16.
Valley View 28, Roger Bacon 27
Roger Bacon’s magical 2019 campaign came to an end in a heartbreaking loss vs. Valley View in an Ohio DIV, Region 16 semi-final matchup at Lakota West in a see-saw matchup.
Valley View led 21-14 at the half and scored first in the second half. But the Spartans would not back down. After coming up with a huge blocked field goal they scored two touchdowns in just over a minute of play. The second touchdown of the two was on Tyler Bullock 28-yard fumble return. However, the extra point was blocked and that would prove to be the difference.
Corey Kiner finished with 221 yards and on 22 carries in the loss. The plays that didn’t count though will be what folks will be talking about. Kiner had a big TD run called back due to penalty and Roger Bacon had a would-be game-winning TD catch on a bomb to Jah’Mal Hutsell wiped off the board as it was ruled out of bounds. Photos and videos later tweeted out proved otherwise:
This catch in the end zone by Roger Bacon wide receiver Jah’Mal Hutsell was ruled out of bounds in the fourth quarter of the regional playoff football game against Valley View. West Liberty Salem 14, Taft 13
Taft’s bid to advance to the Ohio Division V, Region 20 final fell just short as a 36-yard field goal attempt to win the game sailed wide, lifting the Tigers over the Senators on Saturday night at Miamisburg High School.
The Senators were down 14-0 at the half, but hung around and nearly rallied back after the break. Robert Brazziel connected with Gianni Rudolph on a 8-yard TD pass on the team’s opening drive of the second half. Later in the quarter, Brazziel scored on a 7-yard run but the extra point attempt failed and Taft stayed down one and that’s how things would end.
