Cincinnati Round-Up: Playoffs begin with a bang
- Updated: October 9, 2020
The playoffs kicked off across Ohio in Week 7. That led to some big blowouts and some really good teams getting some byes. However, there were still some exciting finishes and clutch performances.
NO. 5 ELDER 42, NO. 17 FAIRFIELD 39
The Panthers had to overcome an 11-point deficit with 10 minutes to play in the game, but came up with the big plays on both sides of the ball when they needed it most.
Andrew Harp pulled in a 13-yard pass from Ben Hambleton with 7:48 to go in the game to cut the lead to five points (failed two-point conversion). Then After Fairfield scored on every one of its second-half possessions, the Panthers finally came up with a stop and forced an Indians’ punt.
That would prove to be the only stop Elder would need. Drew Ramsey punched in the go-ahead score on a 13-yard run with 1:37 to play. Ramsey had a night to remember. He ran the ball 17 times for 188 yards and four touchdowns and added 120 yards on six catches in the win.
Fairfield had a tremendous night on the ground as well. Quarterback Talon Fisher rushed for 112 yards and a touchdown on 19 attempts and running back Jadyan Mayes led the team with 176 yards and two scores on his 19 totes.
Elder moves to face another GMC school next week with No. 2 seed Princeton on tap in the OHSAA Division I, Region 4 quarterfinal.
NO. 11 MASON 34, LEBANON 16
The Comets raced out to a 27-point lead and never looked back as they got by the Warriors in dominating fashion.
Quarterback Michael Molnar led the way, rushing for three touchdowns and running back Nolan McCormick added two more scores on the ground in the win.
The win snapped a two-game skid for Mason, who is now set to GMC rival Colerain next week in Round 2 action. The two teams did not meet in this year’s shortened regular-season.
NO. 13 LAKOTA EAST 28, NO. 15 SYCAMORE 10
The Aviators season ended the same way it started, losing to the Thunderhawks. Lakota East picked up their fourth straight win after starting the season 0-3.
Dual-threat quarterback TJ Kathman was too much for the Sycamore defense to handle. He finished with 134 yards on 15 carries and completed 3-of-6 passes for 77 yards and a touchdown. Jordell Smith rushed for two additional scores in the win.
Lakota East will meet Lakota West next week in what promises to be another classic matchup in one of the Tri-state’s best rivalries.
