NKY Round-Up: Beechwood, NCC move on

Four Northern Kentucky teams played for regional finals on Friday night and two of them were crowned champs, moving a game closer to the ultimate prize.

TRINITY 56, DIXIE HEIGHTS 0
The Colonels entered the contest winning six of their last seven outings, but the Shamrocks were simply too much for the young Dixie Heights’ squad. Trinity put 35 first-quarter points and erased any doubt very early on in this matchup.

Brad West rushed for two scores and Rowan White picked off a pair of passes and ran one of them back for a touchdown in the game’s opening frame alone. West and fellow running back, Armon Tucker, would each finish with three scores in the win.

It was a disappointing finish for the Colonels, but they went 6-4 and the school’s first winning season since 2014. Plus the team looked really good down the stretch. It will be very exciting to see what this year’s junior class does as seniors.

BEECHWOOD 52, BREATHITT COUNTY 7
The running clock was the only thing that slowed down the Tigers in this contest. Beechwood breezed by Breathitt County to win yet another regional title. They are now two wins away from repeating as Class 2A champions.

Cam Hergott once again provided most of the fireworks, rushing for three scores and throwing for three more in the victory. Hergott wasted no time in getting on the board when he hit Brady Moore on a 63-yard TD pass in the team’s very first play.

The Bobcats responded by scoring a  67-yard TD of their own on their first offensive play of the game to knot the game at 7-7. From that point on it was all Tigers.

Avery Courtney scored on a 9-yard run and Tanner Jackson pulled in his first varsity touchdown on a seven-yard catch.

WEST CARTER 43, WALTON-VERONA 6
A successful and emotional campaign came to an end for the Bearcats on Friday night against a stacked Comets’ squad. West Carter entered the game having scored more points than any other Class 2A team in the Bluegrass State and that trend continued here.

Star running back Leetavious Cline rushed for 164 yards and four TDs in the first half and helped lift the Comets to a 28-0 lead and the West Carter defense did the rest as they held down an offense that entered the game averaging 26.5 points per game.

Up next, West Carter will host Beechwood next Friday night with a spot in the KHSAA Class 2A state championship on the line.

NEWPORT CENTRAL CATHOLIC 42, LOUISVILLE HOLY CROSS 21
Joey Runyon had a night to remember, rushing for 191 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Thoroughbreds past the Cougars in the regional finals.

Things were nip and tuck most of the night as the game was tied 21-21 entering the fourth quarter. NewCath put the nail in the coffin though by outsourcing Holy Cross 21-0 the rest of the way. That’s when Runyon did most of his damage as he scored the game’s final three touchdowns.

Malaki Herndon completed 9-of-13 passes for 75 yards and also rushed for 80 yards and a touchdown on 15 attempts. Buddy Atkins added a 2-yard touchdown in the win. In total NCC compiled 308 yards on the ground.
