2020 TSF Dayton Team of the Year: Springfield
- Updated: March 2, 2021
The power of big school football in the Gem City area has shifted to the north and east of town. Springfield (8-2) has been named the 2020 TriState Football Dayton Team of the Year for a second straight season. The Wildcats captured their second consecutive Division I, Region 2 title this past fall and the gridiron momentum doesn’t appear to be letting up anytime soon.
Before 2019, Springfield had never made it to the semi-finals in the playoffs. They now have back-to-back appearances in the final four. Head Coach Moe Douglass upped his record to 47-30 in seven years at Springfield and 148-84 overall in 20 years.
The Wildcats started 2020 at 3-1 with all four games being decided by seven points or less. Springfield then started clicking on all cylinders by winning its next five contests by an average margin of 32.6 points per game. In that span, the offense averaged 39.8 points. The defense allowed just 7.2 points and had three shutouts.
Springfield fell to eventual state champion, St. Xavier, 12-10 in the Division I regional semi-finals. The Wildcats are a combined 20-4 over the last two years.
Junior quarterback Te’Sean Smoot threw for 2,269 yards, ran for 603 yards and accounted for 33 touchdowns (24 pass, nine rush). That effort led to 2020 OPSWA Division I First Team All-Ohio, Third Team All-TSF, TSF Offensive Player of the Year finalist and GWOC Offensive Player of the Year honors.
Junior defensive back Delian Bradley finished the season with 66 total tackles, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery and six interceptions. He was named the 2020 TriState Football Defensive Player of the Year, 2020 OPSWA Division I First Team All-Ohio, First Team All-TSF (for a second straight year) and the GWOC Defensive Player of the Year.
