2020 TSF Kentucky Team of the Year: Beechwood
- Updated: March 1, 2021
A pair of one-point wins to finish out the year propelled Beechwood (10-2) to its fourth state championship in the last five years. It was the 15th title for the program, sixth under head coach Noel Rash and first at the Class 2A level (the other 14 were in Class 1A). Those accomplishments saw the Tigers be named the 2020 TriState Football Kentucky Team of the Year.
After starting off 2-2 with defeats at the hands of reigning Class 5A state champion Covington Catholic and Class 6A Dixie Heights, Beechwood ran the table, winning eight in a row. The last two victories were in thrilling and dramatic fashion.
In the state semi-finals, the Tigers were up 20-0 at West Carter then had to mount a comeback. Beechwood scored on a late touchdown and a two-point conversion with 2:32 left on the clock, for the game’s final points, besting the Comets, 35-34.
In the state title contest, Beechwood escaped with a 24-23 overtime triumph against Lexington Christian Academy. On the final play in regulation, LCA had a 44-yard field goal attempt hit the upright and miss. It would have given the Eagles the win. On their possession in overtime, after finding the end zone, Lexington Christian had their extra point blocked to end the contest, sending the Tigers onto the field to celebrate their championship.
Tigers senior quarterback Cam Hergott would end up being named KFCA Kentucky Mr. Football. He threw for 2,467 yards, ran for 1,078 yards and accounted for 41 touchdowns (26 pass, 15rush).
As for Rash, Beechwood is 164-45 in his 15 years at the helm. The Tigers have never had a losing season and had at least eight victories every year with 10 campaigns of at least 10 victories under his tutelage. In the postseason, Beechwood is a combined 52-9 (seven of those losses were to Mayfield) for an .852 winning %, with six state titles and 13 trips to the state semi-finals (final four), in the last 14 years with Rash leading the way.
