Beechwood knocks off CovCath
- Updated: September 17, 2021
FORT MITCHELL, KY – The Beechwood Tigers have been as good as advertised in 2021, continuing that undefeated streak on Friday night in a 27-7 over powerhouse Covington Catholic Colonels in the Blitz 5 Tailgate Game of the Week.
The Tigers rolled behind their star quarterback Cameron Hergott, who had a 50-yard run early in the first quarter to set up a four-yard touchdown rush by Mitchell Berger to give the Tigers an early 7-0 lead.
Hergott then opened the second quarter with another 50-yard run, taking it to the house for the score. A failed extra point, however, only allowed the lead to extend to 13-0.
The Colonels responded with two minutes left in the first half when quarterback Adam Holtz powered over his offensive line and into the end zone.
On the ensuing kickoff, Beechwood’s Parker Mason returned the kick to the CovCath 12-yard line. That gave way to a Hergott scoring scamper, giving the Tigers a 2-7 halftime lead.
The second half was all Beechwood. A long Tiger drive on their first possession of the quarter led to a short Avery Courtney rushing score to take the final lead to 20.
The Beechwood defense remained stout in the second half, shutting down and shutting out the Colonels offense.
Hergott finished with 165 yards on 17 rushes and two touchdowns while Courtney and Berger each had six touches and a touchdown.
Beechwood will look to move to 6-0 on Oct. 1 when the Tigers take on the Colonels from Dixie Heights. Covington Catholic will look to rebound next Friday when they host Cooper.
