NKY Round-Up: Regular season winds up
- Updated: October 29, 2021
The regular season came to an end on Friday night and with district play finishing up a week ago and playoff seeding set it was a final tune up for teams as they prepare for post-season runs.
COVINGTON CATHOLIC 10, RYLE 3
It was a wet Senior Night in Park Hills and the game was equally as sloppy, at least early on, as both teams struggled to get much offense going.
Covington Catholic put the lone points on the scoreboard in the first half on a 36-yard field goal by Eli Nally. The conditions didn’t slow down after the teams went into the locker rooms.
The Colonels started to take control of things in the third quarter as they churned out the clock with a drive that lasted over nine minutes and went 50 yards, ending on a 3-yard TD run by Preston Agee, who was under center following the injury to Evan Pitzer versus Highlands a week ago.
It appeared as if the Raiders were going to respond with a TD of their own after Logan Verax led Ryle down the field. However, the drive stalled and down two scores they settled for three on a 33-yard field goal by Summer Denigan.
The Colonels got the ball back and never buckled again on defense before running out the clock to pick up their fifth straight win to close out the regular season. Both teams enter the playoffs with a record of 7-3.
BEECHWOOD 70, NEWPORT CENTRAL CATHOLIC 7
The rivalry started 76 years ago, but has been lopsided of late. The Tigers won for the seventh time in eight years versus their longtime foes.
The Thoroughbreds put the first points on the scoreboard when Kolton Smith connected with Luke Runyon for a 19-yard TD pass four minutes into the contest, but that would be the only time they would score all night.
Beechwood scored 70 unanswered points to end the game, including a dominating 28-point effort in the second quarter. The Tigers held a 446-107 advantage in total yards and had 13 more first downs.
Senior Cam Hergott rushed for 226 yards and five touchdowns on 15 carries and completed 4-of-6 passes for 54 yards and another score. Zander Riegler added 74 yards and two touchdowns on just three attempts. They held NewCath to just 7 points, marking the eight time in 10 games where their opponent scored seven points or less.
Beechwood finishes the regular season a perfect 10-0 and have now won 18 straight games dating back to last season.
DIXIE HEIGHTS 41, SCOTT 7
For the first time all year the Colonels picked up consecutive victories as they handled the Eagles with ease on Senior Night at Ricemount Joy Stadium.
Senior quarterback Logan Landers ran for three touchdowns and threw for one more as Dixie Heights put up 420 yards of offense versus their county rivals. Landers only threw six passes on the rain-heavy evening, completing two of them for 84 yards and a touchdown. He also netted 82 yards on 11 carries.
Devin Holbert caught both of Landers’ completions and caught his seventh TD pass of the year Wyatt Hirth was the leading rusher for Dixie, finishing with 111 yards and a score on 15 attempts.
