NKY Round Up: District champs crowned
- Updated: November 12, 2021
District championships were on the line on Friday night, with several familiar names defending their titles from last season.
CLASS 6A, DISTRICT 6
NO. 1 RYLE 36, NO. 2 DIXIE HEIGHTS 7
After a close 13-12 win in the regular season, the Ryle Raiders made it look a little easier against the Dixie Heights Colonels on Friday night in the 6A District 6 playoffs, hammering the Colonels 36-7 in Union.
Ryle got the scoring started in the waning minutes of the first quarter with a short one-yard touchdown run by Lukas Colemire. However, a failed two-point conversion capped the scoring at six points.
After a Raiders field goal to go up 9-0, Logan Landers got the Colonels on the board with a scoring run of his own from two yards out to end the first half. The Raiders responded out of the half with a four-yard scoring scamper from Logan Verax to extend the lead to 16-7.
From there, the Raiders piled on the rushing touchdowns, getting scoring contributions from Gabe Savage, Nathan Yowan, and Beau Faul and sealing the 36-7 win.
In addition to the five different players scoring rushing touchdowns, four different players (Yowan, Verax, Jayce Harden, and Colemire) had at least 50 rushing yards for the Raiders.
Ryle will move on to host Kentucky powerhouse Louisville Trinity, who knocked off Ballard 40-0 on Friday night. The Shamrocks have outscored their two playoff opponents 116-0 in 2021.
CLASS 5A, DISTRICT 5
NO. 1 COVINGTON CATHOLIC 35, NO. 3 CONNER 14
The Covington Catholic Colonels lived up to their top seed on Friday night, beating the Conner Cougars 35-14 in Park Hills.
CovCath quarterback Preston Agee got the Colonels on the board first with a scoring run from 36 yards out. After a Conner score to briefly take the lead, Agee would find the end zone again on another rush from one-yard out to start the second quarter.
Reid Hummel would get in on the rushing score action with a 50-yard score of his own, which was quickly followed up by an Eli Nally field goal to give the Colonels a 24-7 lead at halftime.
After another Nally field goal, Conner quarterback Alex Castrucci found Alijah Thompson for a 75-yard touchdown pass to get within two scores. However, a 39-yard Hummel dash to the end zone put the game away for good for the Colonels, giving CovCath the 35-14 win to advance in the 5A playoffs.
CovCath will move on to take on Woodford County on the road next Friday night at 7:00 p.m.
CLASS 2A, DISTRICT 6
