Cincinnati Round Up: Regional Finals Set

The field continued narrow in playoff action around Southwest Ohio on Friday in the second week of postseason play. This week was highlighted by several rematch games between conference foes.
DIVISION I
Region 4
NO. 3 LAKOTA WEST 12, NO. 2 ST. XAVIER 2
The Lakota West Firebirds were out for revenge on Friday night after squandering a 14-3 lead in its first matchup against the St. Xavier Bombers before losing 31-14 on Aug. 20. Nearly three months later on a neutral field, it was the Firebirds who escaped with the win, beating the Bombers 12-2 to move on to the Division I, Region 4 title game.
On a rainy night throughout the Cincinnati area, the entire game was a defensive battle. No points were scored in the game until early in the second quarter when Lakota West kicker Tyler Bohn knocked through a 32-yard field goal to give the Firebirds a 3-0 lead. Bohn also got the next points of the game, but not until the 2:08 mark in the third quarter when he knocked through another field goal, this one from 38 yards out.
Two minutes into the fourth quarter, Lakota West finally scored the first touchdown in the game after a Cameron Goode 46-yard carry set up a four-yard scoring run, also by Goode. After the failed extra point, the Firebirds led 12-0.
The Bombers didn’t get on the board until a punt late in the game by Lakota West was blocked and went through the end zone, giving St. Xavier the safety.
Lakota West will move on to the regional championship game and take on the top-seeded Moeller Crusaders, who beat Princeton 28-21.

NO. 7 WINTON WOODS 42, NO. 6 LA SALLE 25
In a rematch of the 2020 playoffs that saw the La Salle Lancers bounce the Winton Woods Warriors, it was the Warriors taking the 2021 edition, trouncing the Lancers 42-25 in Liberty Township.
K.C. Spears got the scoring started for the Warriors on the first drive of the game, finding the end zone on a three-yard run. The Lancers wasted no time matching that, lighting up the scoreboard when Timiko Jackson returned the ensuing kickoff 87-yards for the score.
Spears took over the game, matching his season high of three touchdowns in the game to give Winton Woods a 21-10 lead into the half. Spears would finish the game 174 yards on only nine rushes and five touchdowns. Spears’ teammate, Tyrek Spikes, rushed for 169 yards on 20 carries.
La Salle found points in the second half by way of a 38-yard pass from Cam Cope to Jaden Troehler, as well as a seven-yard run by Cope.
Winton Woods advances in the Division II, Region 8 playoffs and will take on Piqua, who bounced Edgewood from the playoffs 28-21.

NO. 4 CLINTON-MASSIE 42, NO. 1 WYOMING 14
The Wyoming Cowboys struggled to find a groove on offense on Friday night, ending their season in upset fashion after being knocked off by the Clinton-Massie Falcons 42-14.
The Falcons got on the board first when Kody Zantene found the end zone on a rush from 29 yards out. That was quickly followed up by a Wyoming score when quarterback Quiad Hauer connected with Sam Prangley for a 63-yard scoring strike through the air. A successful two-point conversion gave the Cowboys their only lead of the game at 8-7.
What followed was an onslaught of points by the Falcons, lighting up the scoreboard for a 28-0 run over two quarters. Carson Vanhoose got the run started on a one-yard scamper to give the lead back to Clinton-Massie.

On the very next drive, Vanhoose let loose again, scoring from 62 yards out, securing the 21-8 Falcon lead going into halftime.
Out of the halftime locker room, Zantene and Colton Trampler got in the rushing touchdown action to extend the lead to 35-8.

Wyoming finally ended the streak by scoring on a 10-yard connection between Hauer and tight end Tony Blair. However, Trampler put the final nail in the coffin by scoring on a one-yard run to cap off the 42-14 win.

Clinton-Massie advances in the Division IV, Region 16 playoffs and will take on McNicholas, who beat Eaton 33-14.
