TSF 2021 Cincinnati DPOY Finalists
- Updated: January 25, 2022
The eight 2021 TriState Football Cincinnati Defensive Player of the Year finalists are all seniors and first-time nominations for the award. This is the 10th consecutive year that Winton Woods has had a DPOY finalist nomination. Anderson, Deer Park, Edgewood and Purcell Marian all have their first-ever nominations on this side of the ball.
The members of the All-TSF Teams, the TSF Teams of the Year, Players of the Year and finalists from Indiana, Dayton, Northern Kentucky and Cincinnati as well as the Mella Windows Players of the Week will be recognized at the TriState Football Year In Review Awards Show on Monday, February 21st, 2022 at the Holy Grail-Banks – RSVP 2021 TSF Year In Review Show
Here is a look at the finalists:
Alex Afari (Lakota West) – OPSWA Division I First Team All-Ohio for a second straight year. Afari’s size makes him a unique menace to contend with. The senior recorded 59 total tackles, two-and-a-half sacks, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery for the 11-2 Firebirds. He also racked up 645 all-purpose yards (307 rec) with five trips to the end zone (three rec, one PR, one KR). Afari has signed with Kentucky.
Jyaire Brown (Lakota West) – OPSWA Division I First Team All-Ohio for a second straight season as well as being named Southwest District DPOY and GMC DPOY. Despite teams trying to throw away from the senior, Brown still managed to come up with five interceptions and two fumble recoveries for a Firebirds defense that allowed just 82.3 yards per game passing with only five touchdown passes against them and 18 picks. He also had four receiving and two punt return touchdowns. Brown has signed with Ohio State.
Brody Foley (Anderson) – OPSWA Division I First Team All-Ohio (DL). Teams ran away from Foley yet he still managed to register 43 total tackles, three sacks, six tackles for losses and an interception. On offense, the Raptors tight end found the end zone five times on 13 receptions. He was a OPSWA Division I Second Team All-Ohio (DL) selection as a junior as well. Foley has signed with Indiana.
Jay’ron Gibson (Winton Woods) – OPSWA Ohio Division II DPOY, First Team All-Ohio, Southwest District DPOY and ECC DPOY. The cornerstone of the state champion Warriors defense. The senior tallied 14.0 sacks which led the ECC to go along with 71 total tackles and a fumble recovery as Winton Woods allowed just 83.8 yards per game on the ground. He has offers from Marist, Robert Morris, Tiffin, West Virginia State, Lake Erie, Capital and Fairmount State.
Norey Johnson (Deer Park) – OPSWA Ohio Division VI DPOY, First Team All-Ohio, Southwest District DPOY and CHL DPOY. Johnson deserves a standing ovation for what he did. Deer Park fielded a roster of just 25 players and was the smallest school in the CHL (and by far). The was amazing for the Wildcats with 128 total tackles, a fumble recovery, two interceptions, 21 total touchdowns (15 rush, four rec, two KRs) while amassing 1,579 all-purpose yards (954 rush, 304 rec, 321 ret). Committed to Grambling State.
Grant Lyons (St. Xavier) – OPSWA Division I First Team All-Ohio and GCL South LBOY. The senior has the knack for making big plays, tallying 67 total tackles, nine sacks with three forced fumbles, a fumble recovery and three interceptions including a pick-six. Lyons has signed with Miami (OH).
Kylyn Macklin (Purcell Marian) – OPSWA Division V First Team All-Ohio and MVC Scarlet DPOY. Macklin was a one-man wrecking crew for the Cavaliers defense recording 100 total tackles (64 solo) and 22.5 sacks. His offers include Tiffin, Fairmont State, Tabor, Benedictine, Muskingum, Wooster, Anderson, Mount St. Joseph and Thomas More.
Radical Rothermel (Edgewood) – OPSWA Division II Second Team All-Ohio and SWOC DPOY. An absolute beast and the centerpiece of the Edgewood (9-3) defense. Rothermel ended the year with 103 total tackles, a sack, a fumble recovery and an interception. He has offers from Lawrence Tech and Lake Erie.
