Gifted would be an understatement when talking Alter linebacker CJ Hicks. His talents have him being honored as the TriState Football Dayton Defensive Player of the Year, as TSF paid tribute to the area’s finest from Cincinnati, Northern Kentucky, Dayton and Southeast Indiana at the Year in Review Show on Monday night, in front of a packed house at the Holy Grail in downtown Cincinnati.

Hicks recorded 84 total tackles and had two interceptions including a 99-yard pick six. The senior amassed 1,560 all-purpose yards (667 rush, 396 rec., 497 ret) and found the end zone (five rush, four rec., one IR). That effort led to him being named OPSWA Ohio Division III DPOY along with First Team All-Ohio and Southwest District DPOY for a second straight season. He was also the GCL Co-ed Co-DPOY.

The senior recorded 207 tackles, had five takeaways (four INT, one FR), two pick-sixes, 2,637 all-purpose yards, 1,039 yards rushing, 32 receptions, eight rushing and six receiving touchdowns in a Knights uniform. Hicks will further his football career in Columbus at Ohio State.

The other finalists were all seniors – Ashton Ault (Bellbrook), Delian Bradley (Springfield), Nathan Coy (Springboro), Cayd Everhart (Tippecanoe), Tywan January (Springfield), Logan Neu (Badin) and Colton Trampler (Clinton-Massie).

TriStateFootball.com was founded in 2005 and started its postseason player awards for Dayton in 2009. In the 13-year history of this award, Hicks becomes just the ninth player to be nominated twice as a TSF Dayton Defensive Player of the Year finalist joining; Darrien Howard (Chaminade Julienne), three times in 2010, ’11, ’12; Trey DePriest (Springfield) in ’09- ’10; Mike McCray (Trotwood-Madison) in ’11-’12; Airius Moore (Beavercreek) in ’12-’13; Alex Reigelsperger (Wayne) in ’16-’17; Trey Baker (Fairmont) in ’18-’19; Hunter Warner (Fairborn) in ’19-’20 and Delian Bradley (Springfield) in ’20-’21.
