2022 Snapshot: Mariemont
- Updated: June 24, 2022
In each of the last two years Mariemont has hosted and won playoff games. The Warriors have played in six postseason games in that span going 4-2. The seniors and juniors on this squad know what it takes to get the job done. This is going to be one tough team to get past come Week 11.
“This team is focused on competition. They have always set lofty goals for themselves. With a large amount of athletes and experience returning the expectations are high and this team knows another great run is within their grasp,” head coach Nick Leone states.
Leone has tools to work with that he didn’t have when he took over the job two years ago. “When I started, we were at 28 players and we now are at almost at 60 players. We return two quarterbacks, three wide receivers and four offensive linemen with varsity experience. On defense we only graduated four starters.”
Leone is looking for upperclassmen to fill major voids in leadership roles vacated by graduation. With his core of returning players that concern should be dissolved relatively quickly for the head coach. The veteran presence on this team should guide Mariemont to another successful season.
Division V, Region 20
2021 RECORD: 8-4, 4-3 CHL
COACH: Nick Leone (14-8 at Mariemont, two years; 14-8 overall)
HONOR ROLL
David Dorsten, Sr, QB/LB – Was rolling right along when injuries took him down last season. A fantastic athlete, Dorsten threw for 1,201 yards, ran for 118 yards, accounted for 16 touchdowns (14 pass, two rush), was in on 31 total tackles, had two sacks, forced a fumble and recovered a fumble in seven games. He was named OPSWA Division V Honorable Mention All-Southwest District for the effort. Dorsten has 118 total tackles and four-and-a-half sacks in his career.
Mark Morgan, Sr, DL – One of the most crucial pieces to the Warriors defense. Morgan was fourth in the CHL with 97 total tackles in 2021. He also had six sacks, two forced fumbles and a pair of takeaways (one FR, one INT) on his way to Second Team All-CHL (DL) honors.
JD Long, Sr, LB – Was lost late last season due to injuries but is healthy now and will be a force for the Warriors defense. Long was named Second Team All-CHL (LB) after tallying 47 total tackles and two-and-a-half sacks as a junior
Henry Dunne, Sr, OL/DL – A starter on both sides of the ball for the past two seasons. Dunne will team with Wade to be the leaders in the trenches. An Honorable Mention All-CHL selection as a junior, Dunne has the potential to be one of best d-linemen in the league. He has 69 total tackles, one-and-a-half sacks, two forced fumbles and four fumble recoveries including a scoop-and-score at the varsity level.
Lawson Wade, Jr, OL – A starter since his freshman season, Wade is a natural leader and a dominant force on both sides of the ball. He is a building block on both sides of the line. Wade will play at the next level. He was a Second Team All-CHL (OL) selection as a sophomore. He also had 35 total tackles, a sack, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery.
Timmy Stewart, Sr, WR/DB – A huge target on the outside for the Mariemont offense and a menace in the secondary. Stewart had 31 receptions for 476 yards, three touchdown catches, 29 total tackles, a sack and three takeaways (two INT, one FR) including a pick-six against rival Madeira on his way to Honorable Mention All-CHL accolades in 2021.
OTHER RETURNEES
Charlie Tully, Jr, QB/DB – A great athlete, an extremely smart player on top of being an excellent leader. Last fall, Tully stepped in at quarterback after Dorsten’s injury and helped lead the Warriors to a home playoff victory. He also started every game at defensive back. Tully threw for 767 yards, ran for 173 yards, accounted for eight touchdowns (six pass, two rush), was in on 33 total tackles, forced two fumbles and had four takeaways (two FRs, two INTs) as a sophomore.
Davis Whitmore, Jr, WR/DB – Stepped in last year after his brother’s injury and never gave up his starting spot the rest of the year. An extremely athletic receiver, Whitmore been one of the Warriors hardest workers this offseason. He hauled in 13 receptions for 189 yards and pair of touchdowns as a sophomore.
Ryan Glassmeyer, Jr, WR/DB – One of Mariemont’s most athletic players. Glassmeyer is poised for a breakout campaign on both sides of the ball. He recorded 31 total tackles last fall.
Andrew Duckwall, Jr, OL/LB – Injuries provided Duckwall opportunities on both sides of the ball last season. He will most likely play the ironman role that Jack Mileham filled for the Warriors the past several years, and be on the field for every snap. Duckwall had 20 total tackles in six games as a sophomore.
NEWCOMERS
There are a ton of new faces out for the team. Seniors TE/DL London Hiltgen, OL/LB Kiefer Burton, RB/LB Jax Peck, WR/DB Connor Jackson and TE/LB Owen Metze will be looked upon to contribute right out of the gate.
