There was very little movement in the Blitz 5 Top 25 presented by TriStateFootball.com after the opening weekend of football. Nobody dropped out of the rankings.
There are four games pitting Top 25 teams this Friday night. Two of those have Top 10 schools sparring, including the Blitz 5 Game of the Week, No. 1 Lakota West at rival No. 9 Lakota East and No. 4 Princeton is hosting No. 10 Colerain. There are 11 teams in the poll that will square off against schools that failed to win in Week 1.
Here is a look at the latest Blitz 5 Top 25:
- Lakota West (1-0) – Showed the poise of a veteran team scoring the go-ahead touchdown and taking the lead for the first time with just 14 seconds left to beat St. Xavier, 16-13. The Firebirds outscored the Bombers 16-0 in the second half. NEXT UP: 8/26 – #9 at Lakota East (0-1).
- Moeller (1-0) – Big Moe made a statement by going on the road and putting up a 49 spot in an 18-point victory over Massillon Washington. NEXT UP: 8/26 – LOUISVILLE TRINITY (KY) (1-0).
- Winton Woods (1-0) – The Warriors made it look easy taking out a very good Trotwood-Madison squad and had a 32-0 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Winton Woods still needs to clean up some sloppy play after being penalized 10 times for 106 yards. NEXT UP: 8/26 – at Walnut Hills (0-1).
- Princeton (1-0) – A dominating performance on both sides of the ball as the Vikings beat Anderson, 61-36. Princeton amassed 546 yards of total offense while the defense had seven sacks and five takeaways including a pick-six. NEXT UP: 8/26 – #10 COLERAIN (0-1).
- St. Xavier (0-1) – They may have lost 18 starters, but the Bombers showed why their “next X-men up” can handle the brightness of Friday night lights. They played well enough to win in a three-point loss at Lakota West. NEXT UP: 8/28 – at Loyola Academy (IL)(1-0).
- Fairfield (1-0) – Kicked off the season on Thursday by getting past an athletic Wayne team, 41-24. The Indians are looking to start the season 2-0 for just the second time since 2017. NEXT UP: 8/26 – at Middletown (1-0).
- La Salle (1-0) – The Lancers gutted out a tough victory at Colerain, 17-13. La Salle has won the last two games in the series by four and six points. NEXT UP: 8/26 – RICC/Canada Prep (0-0).
- Elder (1-0) – The Panthers shared the wealth on offense with five players amassing between 50-94 yards from scrimmage as they doubled up Covington Catholic, 42-21. NEXT UP: 8/26 – PICKERINGTON CENTRAL (1-0).
- Lakota East (0-1) – A heartbreaking 9-6 loss to Centerville saw the Thunderhawks struggle to pick up yards against one of the better defenses in Southwest Ohio. It won’t get any easier this week against rival West and its stellar defense. NEXT UP: 8/29 – #1 LAKOTA WEST (1-0).
- Colerain (0-1) – A tough loss to La Salle has the Cardinals realizing they are on the cusp of something special, but there is room to improve and grow. Four of Colerain’s last five losses have been by seven points or less. NEXT UP: 8/26 – at # 4 Princeton (1-0).
- Kings (1-0) – The Knights picked up where they left off 2021 blanking Sycamore, 36-0. Kings has now won 16 consecutive regular season games. NEXT UP: 8/26 – at Turpin (0-1).
- Hamilton (1-0) – The defense looked good, the offense had some explosive weapons, all-in-all, the 28-9 triumph over West Clermont was a great way to start 2022. NEXT UP: 8/26 – #14 MASON (0-1).
- East Central (1-0) – The Trojans continued their dominance over Lawrenceburg in a 38-3 win. The East Central offense was in midseason form showcasing its many weapons at the skills positions. NEXT UP: 8/26 – at Harrison (0-1).
- Mason (0-1) – Another tough loss for the Comets falling, 9-7 at Gahanna Lincoln. Nine of the Comets last 13 losses have been by eight points or less dating back to September 13th, 2019. NEXT UP: 8/26 – at #12 Hamilton (1-0).
- Ryle (0-1) – The Raiders outplayed Lexington Catholic everywhere, but on the scoreboard coming up short on the road, 27-21. Make no bones about it, Ryle is still one of the best teams south of the river. NEXT UP: 8/26 – at Conner (0-1).
- Milford (1-0) – Head coach Tom Grippa called this the best defense that he has had since coming to Milford. The Eagles showed it on Friday night holding Edgewood to just one score in their 36-point victory. NEXT UP: 8/26 – LEBANON (0-1).
- Anderson (0-1) – No shame in losing to Division I Princeton. The Raptors found out some of their flaws and will look to make the adjustments this week. NEXT UP: 8/26 –at Loveland (0-1).
- Covington Catholic (0-1) – The Colonels need to start strong this week. Cov Cath was down by 35 against Elder before they finally got things going a bit in the third quarter and fourth quarters and eventually fell to the Panthers, 42-21. It was the first time that Covington Catholic has given up 40 or more points in a contest since September 23rd, 2016, a span of 77 games. NEXT UP: 8/27 – at Pikeville (0-1).
- Badin (1-0) – We wouldn’t expect anything less than the Rams’ opening the year with an outstanding defensive performance beating Villa Angela-St. Joseph, 34-3. It was the 12th time in the last 25 games that Badin has held an opponent to seven points or less with five shutouts. NEXT UP: 8/26 – COLUMBUS DE SALES (1-0).
- Sycamore (0-1) – It’s back to the hangar to fine-tune the engine for the Aviators who were blanked by Kings. Plenty to get better at, this week in practice. NEXT UP: 8/26 – OAK HILLS (1-0).
- Taft (1-0) – A dominant defensive performance saw the Senators hold Roger Bacon to (-70) yards of total offense in their shutout of the Spartans. Taft has had this Friday night’s game circled on their calendars all summer long. It’s their Super Bowl. NEXT UP: 8/26 –#24 WYOMING (1-0).
- Edgewood (0-1) – It was almost a carbon copy of last season’s loss to Milford in the opener. The Cougars went on a nine-game winning streak two Fridays after that. Edgewood looks to make that happen again but starting in Week 2 of 2022. NEXT UP: 8/26 – CLINTON-MASSIE (0-1).
- Western Brown (1-0) – The Broncos bucked out of the gate, kicking it up in style and knocked off Hillsboro, 55-0. It was the seventh time in the last 15 tilts that Western Brown has topped the 50-point mark. NEXT UP: 8/26 – at Washington Court House (1-0).
- Wyoming (1-0) – An impressive win in the opener versus the larger Division II Harrison. The Cowboys will have their hands full trying to defend their 58-game regular season winning streak this Friday night. NEXT UP: 8/26 – at #21 Taft (1-0).
- Beechwood (1-0) – The Tigers extended their winning streak to 24 games as they shutout Fairdale. It was the eighth shutout for Beechwood and 17th time they have held an opponent to eight points or less during their run. NEXT UP: 8/26 – PAINTSVILLE (0-1).
KNOCKING ON THE DOOR:
McNicholas, Middletown, Ross, Simon Kenton and Withrow.
