Dayton Round-Up: Elks roar on road

The season has begun and “grit” has won. Centerville goes on the road and grinds one out at a very good GMC school, Lakota East. Waynesville wards off defending Division IV state-champion Clinton-Massie in a thrilling game-ending defensive stand. Springboro stops Lebanon on a potential game-tying two-point conversion with 14 seconds left in the game. If this is a sample of what is to come the next nine weeks are going to be a blast.

CENTERVILLE 9, LAKOTA EAST 6 – At times it wasn’t pretty but Centerville came away with well-earned victory on the road over Lakota East. It was the leg of Elks senior kicker Jackson Courville that provided the games only score before intermission half on a 45-yard field goal, in the first quarter. That 3-0 advantage stood until just under five minutes left in the third stanza when classmate Emable Wakilongo found the end zone. The two-point conversion failed giving Centerville a 9-0 advantage.

The Thunderhawks battled turnover troubles and penalty problems all evening but managed to make it close on a three-yard run by senior Eric Davis with seven-and-a-half minutes left in the contest. Centerville would dig down deep and keep Lakota East out of the scoring column the rest of the way.

Wakilongo was the games leading rusher with 63 yards, Davis had 55 yards rushing. The staunch Elks defense was led by Jean-Joseph Louis who had 16 total tackles (nine solo), three tackles for losses and a sack. Ross Coppock forced a fumble and had an interception with a big 55-yard return at the end of it.
