Firebirds flex on rival Lakota East
- Updated: August 26, 2022
LIBERTY TOWNSHIP, Ohio – Lakota East and Lakota West matched up in one of the area’s most heated rivalries Friday night. Separated by just eight miles, the two programs have no issue being ready to play when they meet on the gridiron.
It was no different in this latest tussle as the 0-1 Thunderhawks played host to the 1-0 and top-ranked Firebirds at Thunderhawk stadium. West coach Tom Bolden was looking to stay unbeaten against his rivals since taking over the helm and the Firebirds were attempting to extend their seven game Greater Miami Conference win streak dating back to last season.
East and head coach Rick Haynes were looking to avoid the dreaded 0-2 start and bring some momentum into the GMC slate while taming their crosstown opposition.
West got things going early with an initial precise drive down the field. After possessing the ball for over six minutes, they would cap things off with a three-yard touchdown run by Trent Lloyd and take a 7-0 lead just over half way through the first quarter.
East would make some headway on their initial drive and keep the possession into the second quarter but were finally forced to punt. Notre Dame commit Ben Minich would block the punt and Taebron Bennie-Powell would scoop and return it for a touchdown to take a 14-0 lead with 9:08 to go in the half.
After another defensive stop, West would begin to flex their muscles as Brennan Remy would score on a 55 yard run just over two minutes later to give the Firebirds a 21-0 lead with 6:38 to go in the half. Remy would do more damage by hauling in a 42 yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Mitch Bolden to give West a commanding 28-0 advantage. Bolden would strike again by finding Rece Mason for a 11 yard score and a 35-0 lead at the half.
Bolden was 7-of-9 for 155 yards and 2 TD’s at the half. Brennan Remy rushed for 61 yards and a touchdown and hauled in his lone reception for 42 yards and another touchdown. East was led in the first half by Eric Davis who rushed for 72 yards in the half.
The third quarter started with a running clock and West still managed to find the end zone when Bolden again connected with Remy, this time for a 43 yard score. DeVeon McCoy would tack on a late twenty yard run to provide the final score of the game for West.
On the final play, East was able to make a late score on a two-yard run by Marvin Richter.
West moves to 2-0 and will likely keep their hold on their Blitz 5 number one ranking as the Thunderhawks fall to 0-2 on the season.
