Princeton outduels Anderson in high scoring opener
- Updated: August 19, 2022
ANDERSON, Ohio – If you’re one for offense in high school football then you wanted to be in Anderson on Friday night for the Blitz 5 Game of the Week.
The Princeton Vikings and Anderson Raptors have become accustomed to shootouts when playing each other in recent seasons.
In last season’s opener the teams combined for over 100 points and 1,000 yards in the Vikings’ 58-45 victory. In this season’s opener, the two teams attempted to outdo themselves from a year ago and they came quite close.
The two teams went on to combine for 97 points as the Vikings went on the road and came away with a 61-36 victory at Brown field. The Vikings were led by quarterback RJ West who posed a problem for Anderson with his passing and rushing ability.
West rushed for 132 yards on the ground and was joined by teammates Deandre Rutherford (130) and Teryntino Brown-Freeman (106) as three teammates all over 100 yards rushing.
After falling behind 3-0, West scored on a 14 yard scamper to put the Vikings ahead. Anderson would respond with a 15 yard passing touchdown of their own, only to be matched again by West who took it in from ten yards out to put Princeton back on top 13-10.
The Raptors kept coming. A turnover sandwiched inside of two touchdowns gave Anderson a 24-13 lead but Princeton would respond with a quick score followed by an interception returned for a touchdown by linebacker Breeon Ishmail.
Princeton also got a strong effort from senior wideout Riley Woods. Woods had a pair of touchdown receptions of 31 and 59 yards and was a nightmare cover for the Anderson secondary
The Vikings led 33-24 at the half and never looked back as they pulled away with several more scores throughout the second half.
After an Anderson touchdown, Rutherford and Brown-Freeman would exchange touchdowns in the third to extend the lead to 47-30 and out of reach for a comeback. West then found junior Dorian Williams for a 65 yard bomb to officially put Anderson away.
