Cincinnati Round-Up: Lakota West stays undefeated
- Updated: September 16, 2022
A GMC power showed their ability and a statement was made in the Eastern Cincinnati conference in week five of the high school football season.
NO.1 LAKOTA WEST 31, NO. 4 PRINCETON 7
Lakota West got off to a strong start in the GMC showdown against Princeton and failed to look back. The Firebirds took a major step toward another league title by defeating the Vikings by a score of 31-7.
One of the top defenses in the state showed why in the first half in repeatedly forcing the Vikings off of the field. After a Tyler Bohn field goal gave West a 3-0 lead at the end of the first quarter, the defense seemed to get even stronger.
West senior quarterback Mitch Bolden delivered on a 3-yard strike to Trent Lloyd for the game’s first touchdown. After the extra point the lead was 10-0. The West defense took the field again and forced a Princeton fumble. Taebron Bennie-Powell scooped the fumble and went 60 yards for a touchdown and a commanding 17-0 advantage.
The Vikings were unable to muster anything to end the half and went in trailing 17-0 at halftime.
Zion Mason tried to turn the tide when he took a Lakota West punt 92 yards and in for a score to get the Vikings juiced up. After the point after, Princeton had cut the lead to 17-7 with 8:42 left in the third quarter.
Both teams struggled for leverage in the third until Mitch Bolden capped off a drive with a 3-yard touchdown run to put West up 24-7 with 44 seconds left in the third. The lead would be too much to overcome for the Vikings.
West would tack on another score late in the game for a 31-7 lead with just over three minutes remaining. Trent Lloyd made a 14-yard scamper into the endzone for the touchdown and the effective seal on the victory.
Micah Markley led the Firebird defense with 10 tackles and Mike Brankamp added nine tackles up front for Lakota West. Ben Minich and Bennie-Powell added seven tackles apiece.
NO. 9 KINGS 41, NO. 14 MILFORD 7
The Kings Knights made their case to be seen as the top team in the Eastern Cincinnati Conference after a convincing win over Milford on Friday night.
Kings quarterback Will Kocher had a huge night in leading his team to 27 second half points en route to a dominating victory.
After the Knights led 14-7, Milford had the opportunity to tie the game after a solid drive but were unable to convert. Kings held the 14-7 lead at the half and were able to explode in the second half.
Kocher would find Michael Mussari for a 30-yard strike and the Kings defense would step up with an interception of Milford quarterback Austin Hardin. Kocher went back to work, this time on the ground with a 13-yard rushing touchdown. The lead was 28-7 in a blink.
The defense of the Knights continued to hold up their end as they would intercept Hardin again after another tipped pass. Kocher again would repay his defense by finding Mussari this time for an 18-yard score and a 35-7 lead.
One more time it was Kocher to Mussari from 30 yards out for a 41-7 advantage and victory for Kings who sits atop the ECC standings.
Kocher had 332 yards passing and four touchdowns through the air and added 67 yards rushing and two more scores for the Knights in the win. Michael Mussari caught eight passes for 235 yards and four scores.
NO. 7 ELDER 24, LOUISVILLE ST. XAVIER 13
Elder returned to The Pit and got a huge victory against visiting St. Xavier (KY) on Friday night.
The Panthers held a 3-0 lead after a Max Lemasters field goal late in the first quarter. St. Xavier would respond with a touchdown to take a 7-3 lead half way through the first half. Elder again would turn the tide when quarterback Ben Schoster hooked up with Luke Autenreib for a 51-yard touchdown and a 10-7 lead at the half.
The teams would exchange field goals in the third in a highly contested affair. Elder took a 13-10 lead into the fourth quarter and were able to make the plays needed to close out a home win.
Schoster got a 1-yard touchdown plunge with 11:06 to play in the game and led 17-13. After more tough, hard nosed defense, the Panthers’ Luke Flowers took a handoff and went 38 yards for a touchdown and a 24-13 lead with four minutes remaining.
Elder would not relinquish the lead and closed out a big win. Luke Flowers rushed for 71 yards and a touchdown and Ben Schoster threw for 186 yards and a touchdown to lead Elder.
