Hester’s big night powers Cowboys
- Updated: September 10, 2022
CINCINNATI , Ohio – Wyoming and Indian Hill have proven to be the cream of the crop in the Cincinnati Hills League for quite some time. In four of the past six seasons, the Cowboys and Braves have finished first and second in the league standings respectively. The only outliers being in 2020 when they did not play each other so they tied for the league title, and 2021 when they finished first and third.
The CHL started conference play this week and it didn’t take long for the reigning league champion to pick up where it left off. The Wyoming Cowboys, who have won six straight conference titles started strong in their quest for a seventh straight by defeating Indian Hill by a score of 48-7 on Friday Night.
Wyoming was led by senior running back CJ Hester who was a nightmare for the Braves to contend with for the entire night. Hester rushed for 281 yards and six touchdowns on 24 carries to catapult the Cowboys to 1-0 in Cincinnati Hills League play. Wyoming rushed for 354 yards as a team while holding the Braves -1 rushing and just 84 yards of total offense in the contest.
Hester got things started for Wyoming on the ground. After a solid drive in the latter part of the first quarter, the running back headed to Western Michigan was able to punch one in from a short distance to put the Cowboys ahead 7-0 with 4:32 to go in the first stanza.
Indian Hill would respond by getting a stop and going on a drive of their own in the second quarter. Quarterback Alex Grace would find CJ Hayden for a touchdown reception and the Braves had things even with 9:14 to go in the half. This was the first score allowed by the Wyoming defense all season.
Wyoming would then take off. The response was quick and first was a nice rushing TD by Hester with 7:04 to play in the half and a 14-7 lead. After a defensive stand, Hester was at it again with another touchdown run, this one from around 35 yards out and a 21-7 advantage. The Cowboys would take that lead into the halftime break but they would not be finished.
After halftime, the Wyoming defense began to flex their muscles. They would begin to force Indian Hill off of the field repeatedly and give room for Hester to have himself a career night. Hester ran in another touchdown with 9:22 left in the third for his fourth score of the night.
Shortly after, Wyoming’s Anderson Mitchell intercepted an Indian Hill pass and again it was Hester punching one in after another solid offensive drive. The lead was 35-7 and the Cowboys were feeling good about their performance on the road. Just for good measure, Hester would again find the endzone in the third quarter for his sixth touchdown of the night and a 41-7 lead heading into the fourth period.
The hefty lead started the running clock and a convincing victory for one of the top teams in their region.
