NKY Round-Up: Beechwood wins big
- Updated: October 7, 2022
There were some big scoring nights in Northern Kentucky as several area teams lit up the scoreboard on their way to big convincing victories.
NO. 22 BEECHWOOD 55, HOLY CROSS 3
Beechwood ran away from Holy Cross early and often to the tune of a dominating 55-3 victory on Friday night. The Tigers outgained Holy Cross 363-47 in total offense in an all-around big victory. The Beechwood defense held Holy Cross to 1 yard rushing and 46 yards passing to come three points shy of a shutout. They only allowed two first downs all night.
Beechwood quarterback Clay Hayden was 12-14 for 181 yards and three touchdowns on the night. He connected with three different receivers for scores on his efficient night. On the ground the Tigers were led by Mitchell Berger who rushed for three scores. Berger has seven carries for 115 yards.
Beechwood led 42-3 at the half and never looked back as they seem to be running on all cylinders as we head towards season’s end.
SIMON KENTON 66, DIXIE HEIGHTS 23
Simon Kenton moved to 3-3 on the season with a convincing 66-23 victory over Dixie Heights on Thursday night. The Pioneer offense moved the ball for 662 yards of total offense in the game. Senior running back Jayden Lawson had an incredible night rushing for a career-high 297 yards and three touchdowns in the win.
Quarterback Chase Crone threw for 195 yards and called his own number for four rushing scores. Simon Kenton took a 28-0 first quarter lead and never looked back as they snapped a four-game losing streak against the Colonels.
Lawson and Crone have battled injuries this season for Simon Kenton but appear to be coming into form at the right time. The two had big nights last week and followed it up with solid performances this week as well.
Dixie Heights had 280 total yards on the night with quarterback Armani Gregg accounting for 218 of those yards in the passing game. Trey Barnette had a solid night with 10 receptions, 136 yards, and a touchdown as Gregg’s favorite target in the loss.
NEWPORT CENTRAL CATHOLIC 60, LUDLOW 30
Newport Central Catholic exploded for 60 points and got the better of Ludlow in a high scoring affair on Thursday night. NCC rushed for 388 yards on the ground in a physical win. Demetrick Welch Jr. carried the ball 13 times for 189 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Thoroughbreds. NCC also got a strong performance in the backfield from Kaleb Cole. Cole rushed five times for 119 yards and a pair of scores to do his part.
Quarterback Kolton Smith was efficient under center going 11-13 for 160 yards and three touchdowns in a winning effort. He connected with three different receivers for his touchdown throws.
Jason Rice was a bright spot for Ludlow in the loss. The quarterback was a threat in both the passing and rushing game. Rice was 18-21 for 288 yards and three touchdowns for his team. He also carried the load on the ground by rushing 19 times for 72 yards and another score.
