Indiana Round-Up: East Central, Lawrenceburg move on
- Updated: November 18, 2022
East Central and Lawrenceburg both represented the Tri-state area well on Friday by punching their state championship game tickets with big wins in front of their home crowd on a chilly Friday night in Southwest Indiana.
CLASS 4A
EAST CENTRAL 24, RONCALLI 21 OT
The Trojans are one win away from their first state championship since 2017 (second overall – 1994) as they punched their ticket to Lucas Oil Field next week for the 4A title game with a thrilling 24-21 overtime win at home Friday night.
After Roncalli fumbled on fourth down to open up the extra frame, Nathan Mcfee nailed a chip-shot, 22-yard field goal to seal the deal. Quarterback Cole Burton ran for a score and connected with Eli Aston from 12 yards out for another TD to pace the attack.
The Royals won a regular-season meeting between the two schools in this same stadium and had a chance to take the game in regulation on a 30-yard field goal attempt with under a minute to play. However, Aston had something else in mind as he blocked the kick to force overtime.
The game was closely contested throughout between these postseason rivals. The Trojans tallied 291 total yards of offense compared to 287 for the Royals.
East Central will play New Prairie next Friday at 3:30 PM in Indianapolis for a state championship.
CLASS 3A
LAWRENCEBURG 35, MONROVIA 7
Playing in their first semi-state matchup since 2016, Lawrenceburg rolled past Monrovia in impressive fashion.
The Bulldogs finished the regular season 2-7 after playing a brutal schedule, but rolled off four straight victories to earn their spot in the final four, but the Tigers overmatched them in this one right out of the gate.
Lawenceburg’s experienced defense dominated the game and proved to be too much for Monrovia’s modernized Wing-T offense in this affair.
Teagan Bennett scored three times in the first half to pace the Tigers’ attack.
Lawrenceburg is now set to face Indianapolis Bishop Chatard next Saturday at 3:30 PM ET at Lucas Oil Field for the 3A state championship.
