NKY Round-Up: Three still alive

Only three Northern Kentucky teams were still alive to start the weekend and all three of them moved on with regional championship wins on Friday night.

CLASS 2A

BEECHWOOD 49, SHELBY VALLEY 12

For the ninth straight year the Tigers will be playing in a state semifinal matchup following an impressive 49-12 route over Shelby Valley.

Beechwood had the running clock rolling before halftime as they led 42-0 at the break. Running back Chase Flaherty scored three times on the ground (25, 5, 3 yard runs) and Clay Hayden threw for a pair of scores to pace the attack.

The Tigers now are set to host Lloyd next weekend with a trip to Lexington and the Class 2A championship on the line. Beechwood won a meeting between these two teams 34-7 on October 14.

LLOYD 41, BREATHITT COUNTY 32

The Juggernauts locked up their first regional title since 2023 with an impressive 41-32 win over Breathitt County at home on Friday night.

The two teams traded punches all night long, but Lloyd sealed the deal when Isaiah Sebastian connected with Kaiden Zulager on a 28-yard TD pass with 3:43 left to go to put Lloyd up two scores. Zulager scored five times in the win. Sebastian dazzled all night too, including on a highlight reel 65-yard TD run earlier in the quarter.

Breathitt County didn’t do themselves any favors in this contest. Mistakes plagued the visitors all night, including seven penalties and two turnovers in the first half alone.

CLASS 1A

NEWPORT CENTRAL CATHOLIC 28,  KENTUCKY COUNTRY DAY 21

NewCath scored 21 first-quarter points and then held on the knock win on the road at Kentucky Country Day and advanced to next week’s KHSAA state semifinals. With the victory the Thoroughbreds claimed their second regional title in three years.

Luke Runyon led the way with all four touchdowns for the ‘Breds. The senior finished the night with 90 yards and three touchdowns on just five carries and three catches for 26 yards and another score. He also led the team with eight total tackles. Demetrick Welch Jr added 58 yards on a team-high 11 carries and added an interception on defense.

Kentucky Country Day outgained NCC 344 yards to 233 yards in the contest, but they couldn’t escape the early hole they dug or the two turnovers.
