A second straight Division I state runner-up finish and fourth consecutive Division I, Region 2 title has Springfield (13-2) being named the 2022 TriState Football Dayton Team of the Year. The Wildcats have taken this honor four years in a row as the dynasty continues to grow in Champion City.

Springfield got a rematch and a chance to avenge last year’s title game loss with St. Edward (15-1), unfortunately the Eagles got the best of the Wildcats again, 28-14.

This was the most explosive of the four Springfield teams that have won regional crowns. They scored more than 500 points (522) for the first time during head coach Moe Douglass’ tenure. The Wildcats averaged 385.3 yards of total offense (314.1 pass, 71.2 rush) and 34.8 points per game. The defense yielded just 13.0 points per contest holding nine foes to 14 points or less with three shutouts.

The senior class set the program’s highest standards going a combined 34-6 (13-3 in the playoffs) over the past three years (46-8 in their four seasons). Two of the Class of 2023’s losses came in state championship games and two in state semi-final contests.

Douglass upped his record to 73-34 in nine years at Springfield and 174-88 overall in 22 years.
