Player Spotlight: Demetrick Welch
- Updated: March 29, 2023

Without much fanfare Newport Central Catholic running back/outside linebacker Demetrick Welch put together a stellar 2022 campaign. His diligent and focused performance was key as the Thoroughbreds finished 11-3 and made it to the Class 1A state semifinals where they fell to eventual state champion, Pikeville.
The 6-foot, 195-pound Welch was dominant starting in Week 3 last season against Roger Bacon. The Thoroughbreds would win that battle and the next five affairs that followed. In those six victories, NewCath averaged 43.8 points per game while Welch ran for 969 yards (161.5/game), averaged 11.4 yards per carry, had 149 yards rushing or more five times and 15 touchdowns (13 rushing, and all on the last five games).
Welch would finish his junior campaign with 1,346 yards rushing, 15 receptions for 169 yards and 20 touchdowns (17 rush, three rec). The efforts earned the explosive runner NKFCA First Team All-NKY (RB), Third Team All-TSF (RB) and TSF Northern Kentucky Offensive Player of the Year Finalist honors. On defense, Welch tallied 56 total tackles, had two sacks, six tackles for losses and a pair of interceptions.
“Demetrick is a great kid. He is a hard-working leader in school and takes great pride in everything he does,” head coach Stephen Lickert boasts about Welch. “He just wants to be the best version of himself on and off the field and he maintains a strong work ethic to make that happen.”
Welch heads into his senior year with 2,142 yards on the ground, 30 catches for another 389 yards and 33 touchdowns (29 rush, four rec). He is drawing interest from college coaches, but no one has made him an offer. With Welch’s high character and leadership intangibles accompanying his on-field prowess expect that to all change, sooner rather later. With another year left, expect one fantastic trip to the finish line from this Thoroughbred.
