2023 Snapshot: Lloyd Memorial
- Updated: May 12, 2023
Coming off one of the best campaigns in school history, Lloyd is eager to build upon its success of 2022. The Juggernauts made it to the state semi-finals for the first time since 2003 (under Roy Lucas, Jr. now head coach at Simon Kenton) and won 10 games or more for the first time in 31 years (11-2 in 1991). With a proven cast returning from last season’s squad, the program appears to be destined for a long run of prosperity.
“We have a large senior class of leaders and a large group of players who have seen valuable minutes on the field over the last couple years. Our team goals are to focus on ourselves and become better student athletes. If we are able to do that, then the wins will follow,” Head Coach Kyle Niederman states.
To make the upcoming 2023 season even more exciting is, the long overdue overhaul that Lloyd is getting to its home venue, Cecil Dees Field. The Juggernauts will be playing on a new synthetic turf field, the fans will be welcomed into Cecil Dees field through a beautiful new front entrance and then sitting in new bleachers. In all, it is a $3.3 million dollar renovation project. You know what they say, “if you look like a million dollars, you’ll play like a million dollars.
Lloyd is also faced with the challenge of moving up a Class and into a District where it has no natural rivalries and knows very little about its new opponents. The Juggernauts will play in Class 3A, District 5 with Lexington Catholic, Bourbon County and Pendleton County. Bourbon County and Lex Cath move down from Class 4A.
“Moving up to 3A will be a huge step for us, but none the less we are excited about the opportunity to build upon the success of last season and make our 3A competition aware that Juggernaut football is not to be overlooked,” Niederman says. This a veteran Lloyd squad that should not be phased by the move.
There is an energy building in Erlanger. Lloyd has layered talent from seniors down to freshmen. The program is as “healthy” as it has ever been. Expect the Juggernauts to start winning on a consistent basis for years to come.
Class 3A, District 5
2022 RECORD: 10-4, 2-1 Class 2A, District 6
COACH: Kyle Niederman (23-19 at Lloyd Memorial, four years; 23-19 overall)
HONOR ROLL
Thomas Plymesser, Sr, OL/DL – A two-way starter who opponents must game plan around. Plymesser tallied 54 total tackles, had three sacks, one fumble recovery and a pick-six on this way to Second Team All-NKY (DL) honors as a junior.
Avander Abrams, Sr, FB/DE – A beast on both sides of the ball. On offense, Abrams is a lead blocker at fullback. Defensively, he tallied 59 total tackles, had 10.0 sacks, forced two fumbles and recovered three fumbles as a junior. He was named Second Team All-NKY (DL) for his efforts.
OTHER RETURNEES
John Crim, Sr, DB/WR – A fierce competitor that brings a lot of experience to the table on both sides of the ball. Crim had 79 total tackles and four interceptions including a pick-six a year ago. He also had a rushing touchdown.
Elijah Westwood, Sr, TE/LB/K – Hard work and dedication to the “team first” mentality is what makes Westwood one of the leaders on the team. Westwood led Lloyd with 106 total tackles last fall. He also had a sack and forced a fumble. Westwood has 72 career points kicking the football, including four field goals.
Terry “TJ” Jackson, Sr, OL/DL – Always one of the strongest kids on the field on Friday nights. Jackson uses that strength to open up holes for his teammates and to shut down opposing offenses. He registered 24 total tackles and seven sacks as a junior.
Sam Stamper, Sr, C/DL – The anchor the o-line and general of the offense. Stamper knows what every position is supposed to do and the other players on the field with him lean on his knowledge and leadership in the huddle.
Isiah “Petey” Sebastian, Jr, / ATH/QB/DB – A dynamic player who can take over a game on both sides of the ball with his athletic ability and knowledge. Sebastian had a breakout season in 2022 throwing for 757 yards, running for 918 yards, accounting for 23 touchdowns (14 rush, seven pass, one PR, two IR), getting in on 44 total tackles, recovering a fumble and snaring eight interceptions.
KyRon Carter, Jr, OL/DL – A force in the middle of the Juggernauts defense who causes havoc for opposing centers. Carter worked hard to help himself athletically this offseason and should move much better in the trenches. He was in on 28 total tackles and had five sacks as a sophomore.
Yurii Collins-Comer, Jr, RB/LB – Already a stud on defense, Collins-Comer looks to be significantly more involved on the offensive side of the ball this season. He had 96 total tackles, a sack, three fumble recoveries, six receptions for 88 yards, 156 yards and a touchdown rushing as a sophomore.
Tyler Copeland, Jr, RB/WR/DB – Established on the defensive side of the ball, now Copeland hopes to add his versatility on offense. As a sophomore, Copeland was in on 65 total tackles, had a fumble recovery, an interception, 106 yards rushing, 21 receptions for 263 yards and four touchdowns (three rec, one rush).
NEWCOMERS
Landin Bishop, Sr, RB/LB – Hopes to jump into a larger role on the offensive side of the ball and show that he can carry more of a load for the team. Bishop ran for 117 yards and a pair of touchdowns a year ago.
Seth Moran, Sr, RB/LB/DE – Has transferred back to Lloyd and will help fill into one or multiple roles left open by the graduating class.
Elijah Collins, Jr, WR/DB – After joining the team last season Collins showed huge growth and was able to contribute on both sides of the ball. This fall the coaches expect him to be able to take his game to another level and really make a name for himself. Collins had 21 receptions for 201 yards, two touchdown catches, one touchdown pass and 31 total tackles as a sophomore.
Nishawn Golsby, So, WR/DB – Has caught the eyes of the coaches with his hard work on and off the field along with his playmaking ability when he gets in the game. Golsby ran for 86 yards as a freshman.
Kaleb Evans, So, QB – Adds a true passing dynamic to the Lloyd offense. As Evans gains experience and confidence, it will give the Juggernauts the opportunity to stretch the field and take some pressure off the running game. He threw for 137 yards and a touchdown as a freshman.
