Coming off the school’s first regional championship in 20 years and eighth in school history, Valley View is about to find out if it has enough in the tank to make another deep playoff run. The Spartans graduated six first team all-league selections but those who have waited their turn are more than confident that they can make this another memorable season in Germantown.

“The players have been working hard throughout this offseason. Everyone is excited for the season and to build on what was done last year,” head coach Matt King states. Despite the two decades between its last two regional crowns, Valley View has still managed to win 10 or more games five times in the past 10 years. Winning just seems to be an embedded trait in every kid that comes through the Spartans program.

For this group to have that kind of continued success King will look to his veteran playmakers. “Our skills positions on both sides of the ball will have the most experience. Offensively our quarterback, Caden Henson is a very good player. We have two very good returning linebackers, in Bryce Reed and Landen Malara.”

Seniors like these three, understand what it takes and the preparation it needs to get through the rigors of a difficult schedule both mentally and physically. Last fall, in Week 6 the grind began for Valley View. The Spartans reeled of nine straight victories before falling to Ironton in the state semifinal. Those nine foes (Carlisle twice) were a combined 81-32 (.717 winning %). Expect this team’s mental toughness to emerge more and more as this season wears on and that will make them a real “bear” to face come playoff time.
