2023 Snapshot: Dayton
- Updated: July 2, 2023
The train is picking up steam at Dayton. The Greendevils return 16 seniors on a team that has won first round playoff games in each of the last two years, a feat that hasn’t happened for the program since before the 21st century.
Dayton’s bread-and-butter is its Veer offensive scheme. The Greendevils ran for 224.0 yards per game and found the end zone 30 times rushing a year ago. Head coach Jesse Herbst would like to see the offense be more consistent putting points on the board. They scored eight points or less in five of their six losses in 2022.
The Dayton defense should be even better than the group that gave up just 20.3 points per game last season. The Greendevils held six foes to 14 points or less.
There is still some magic left O.W. Davis. Last fall, Dayton won its first post season game on its home field since 1998. If ever was “the little engine that could” to root for this Dayton squad would be it. This is a team that promises highly entertaining and fun to watch in 2023.
Class 1A, District 3
2022 RECORD: 6-6, 2-1 Class 1A, District 4
COACH: Jesse Herbst (20-24 at Dayton, four years; 20-24 overall)
TOP RETURNEES
DeAngelo Jiminez, Sr, DL – The leader of the Greendevils defense and a dominant force up front. Jiminez has 97 total tackles, one sack and 15.0 tackles for losses in his career.
Mason Johnson, Sr, RB/DB/KR – Had a bust out junior campaign. Johnson was a factor in all three phases of the game. He recorded 67 total tackles, ran for 336 yards, had 12 receptions for 183 yards and found the end zone 10 times (five rush, three rec, one PR, one KR).
Caleb Crutchfield, Sr, DB – A key member of what should be a very good secondary. Crutchfield has 135 total tackles and three interceptions at the varsity level.
Eric Simpson, Sr, DB – Like Johnson and Crutchfield, Simpson is a veteran, polished commodity in the defensive backfield. He has registered 110 total tackles, recovered a fumble and snared two interceptions in his career.
